Phnom Penh, Apr. 7 – Prime Minister Hun Manet has shared an ambitious vision for the future of Cambodia’s capital, expressing hope that Phnom Penh could one day feature underwater roads to enhance cross-river connectivity. The idea reflects a broader push to modernize infrastructure and accommodate the city’s growing transportation needs.
Speaking at the inauguration of the USD 37 million Morodok Techo Flyover on Monday, the Prime Minister highlighted Cambodia’s progress in constructing large-scale infrastructure such as bridges, flyovers, and road networks. “I’ve started thinking about studying the idea. In the future, I hope we can have an underwater road to cross the river. That’s the vision,” he said.
He noted that Cambodia has already built numerous bridges across rivers and estuaries, easing the transport of goods and improving mobility. The current focus is on continuing this momentum to develop a more integrated and efficient infrastructure system.
Following the achievement of complete peace, the Royal Government of Cambodia has prioritized infrastructure development—ranging from roads and railways to airports, ports, and bridges. These investments aim to facilitate public travel, stimulate economic activity, and improve quality of life across the country.
Addressing the realities of urban growth, Hun Manet emphasized that while the government cannot limit the public’s purchase of vehicles, it can and must expand road infrastructure to meet increasing demand.
Currently, commuters from Arey Ksat to Phnom Penh depend on ferry services. To address this, the government has announced plans to further develop the area with improved access, better infrastructure, and more high-rise buildings. The upcoming construction of the Cambodia-Korea Friendship Bridge will be a key milestone in this development.
In addition to that project, the Prime Minister revealed that two to three more river bridges will soon be inaugurated to further reduce travel bottlenecks and increase convenience for residents and commuters alike.
Hun Manet also celebrated recent achievements in public infrastructure, citing five key milestones accomplished before and after the recent election period:
- Groundbreaking for a 50-meter road linking the 60-meter road to Dangkor
- Launch of the Chak Angre Krom Bridge to Prek Pra
- Groundbreaking for a twin flyover
- Inauguration of a wastewater treatment plant
- Opening of the Morodok Techo Flyover
The newly opened Morodok Techo Flyover is Cambodia’s eighth and most complex flyover to date. It is a three-level structure strategically located at the intersection of Samdech Techo Hun Sen Boulevard, Preah Monivong Boulevard, and Yothapol Khemarak Phoumin Boulevard (Street 271), connecting the Meanchey and Chamkar Mon districts of Phnom Penh.
Other major flyovers in the capital include Kbal Thnal, 7 Makara (Lok Sangha), Stung Meanchey, Takhmao, Phsar Dei Huy, Chom Chao Circular, and Russey Keo.
As Cambodia continues on its path of development, the government remains committed to long-term infrastructure planning and visionary projects that meet the evolving needs of its citizens.
