Cambodia is set to establish its inaugural wind farm, with planned sites in Mondulkiri province and Bokor Mountain, Kampot, marking a significant shift towards renewable energy sources in the kingdom. This announcement was made by Keo Rattanak, the Cambodian Minister of Mines and Energy, highlighting the nation’s commitment to exploring wind energy as a viable and sustainable power solution.

Highlighting the initiative, Minister Rattanak shared the vision of leveraging wind power in the near future, with specific focus areas being Mondulkiri province and Bokor Mountain. These locations have been identified as potential sites for harnessing wind energy, aiming to contribute substantially to Cambodia’s power needs.

Heng Kunleang, Director General of the General Department of Energy, detailed the government’s approach towards this venture. He stated that the Ministry of Mines and Energy is facilitating partnerships between local and international companies to conduct comprehensive studies on the feasibility of the wind farm project. Unlike typical practice, the ministry has opted not to predefine the investment scale, allowing for flexible and in-depth exploration of the project’s potential.

The integration of wind power is expected to bolster the national grid, which falls under the management of Electricite du Cambodge (EDC), thereby ensuring a steady and reliable power supply across the country. By adopting wind energy, Cambodia aims to join the global movement towards sustainable and clean energy sources, reducing reliance on traditional fossil fuels.

During a state visit to France in mid-January 2024, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet engaged in discussions with Olivier Duguet, Chairman and CEO of Blue Circle, a company with a keen interest in establishing wind power generation in Cambodia. Duguet highlighted the promising wind energy prospects at Bokor Mountain and certain areas in Mondulkiri, proposing an initial project capable of generating 100 megawatts. This collaboration has the potential for expansion, contributing significantly to the nation’s energy sustainability efforts.

Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed his full support for such investments, urging Blue Circle to collaborate closely with local partners and government bodies to bring this pioneering project to fruition. The venture aligns with Cambodia’s goals of diversifying its energy sources and advancing its sustainable development agenda.

Established in 2013, Blue Circle is a foremost renewable energy company in Southeast Asia, focusing on developing and operating renewable energy projects across the region. With a presence in Singapore, Ho Chi Minh City, Bangkok, and Phnom Penh, the company leverages cutting-edge technology to craft responsible and sustainable energy solutions, underscoring its commitment to contributing to the green energy transition in Asia-Pacific.
