NICOSIA, Cyprus – The Kingdom of Cambodia and the Republic of Cyprus have reached an agreement in principle to establish a “Tourism Pole,” a landmark initiative aimed at driving mutual economic growth through enhanced traveler exchanges and joint investment ventures.
The announcement followed an annual review meeting held Wednesday between H.E. Dr. Chea Chandboribo, Cambodia’s Ambassador to Cyprus, and Mr. Christopher Larcou, the Honorary Consul of Cambodia in Nicosia.
A Strategic Roadmap for 2026
The “Tourism Pole” serves as the centerpiece of a comprehensive diplomatic and economic strategy for 2026. This roadmap prioritizes high-impact sectors to ensure sustainable bilateral development.
Joint Promotional Programs and Trade Fairs
The initiative will involve coordinated participation in international trade fairs and the development of joint promotional programs. By aligning their marketing efforts, both nations aim to create a direct networking pipeline between tourism agencies and private sector investors.
Media Collaboration and Cultural Visibility
To support this growth, both parties agreed to deepen collaboration with Cambodian and Cypriot media outlets. The goal is to better highlight investment opportunities and the rich cultural heritage of both nations, bridging the geographical gap through digital and broadcast storytelling.
Expanding FDI and Public-Private Networks
A major focus of the 2026 strategy is the expansion of networks within the public and private sectors. These efforts are specifically designed to attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) to Cambodia, leveraging Cyprus’s strategic position in the Mediterranean to reach European investors.
Strengthening Diplomatic Ties and Consular Efficiency
During the session, Ambassador Dr. Chea Chandboribo expressed high regard for Mr. Larcou’s “active and effective” role in bolstering Cambodia’s diplomatic prestige within Cyprus.
The meeting highlighted that 2025 was a year of significant progress, particularly in:
- Consular Service Efficiency: Improving the ease of travel and documentation for citizens of both nations.
- Bilateral Trade: Strengthening the exchange of goods and services.
- Cultural Exchange: Fostering a deeper understanding between the Khmer and Cypriot people.
Impact on Regional Tourism and Economy
The establishment of a “Tourism Pole” reflects Cambodia’s broader economic ambition to diversify its tourism portfolio. By partnering with a European Union member state like Cyprus, Cambodia positions itself as a premier destination for Mediterranean travelers, while Cyprus gains a strategic partner in the heart of ASEAN.
“This partnership represents a transition toward a more integrated economic relationship, moving beyond traditional diplomacy into tangible sector growth,” the officials noted during the review.
