Cambodia Gears Up for 5G Network Rollout

by Surya Narayan

Cambodia is set to embrace the 5G network across the nation, marking a significant leap towards advanced connectivity. The government’s initiative to integrate this cutting-edge technology was highlighted by Chea Vandeth, the Minister of Posts and Telecommunication, during the inaugural Digital Government Forum and Digital Technology Expo held at the Diamond Island Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Minister Vandeth emphasized the strategic timing for introducing 5G technology, underscoring the ministry’s focus on enhancing digital infrastructure as a key priority. The introduction of 5G, the foremost standard for broadband cellular networks initiated globally by mobile operators in 2019, is anticipated to bring transformative benefits to societal and economic realms.

The ministry is formulating a policy to ensure that all operators can access the essential 100 MHz spectrum needed for 5G networks. The realization of 5G’s full potential hinges on the active involvement of both governmental bodies and regulatory authorities.

Parallel to the 5G initiative, the ministry continues to expand the telecommunication infrastructure for 4G mobile and internet services across Cambodia, aiming to reach educational institutions, healthcare centers, commune offices, and police stations.

Prime Minister Hun Manet, addressing the forum, lauded the significant strides made in the country’s digitalization journey. He noted that the digital transition has been notably accelerated by the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. This acceleration is evident in the realm of digital payments, which surged to about $492 billion by 2023, reflecting nearly 16 times the national GDP.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the substantial increase in mobile internet and subscription users, exceeding 19 million by 2023, further indicating the rapid adoption of digital technologies across the nation.

The forum, which runs from March 11 to 13 in Phnom Penh, is themed around ‘Sustainable and Inclusive Development through Digital Policy Implementation.’ It serves as a platform to demonstrate the achievements in digital government transformation, in line with strategic frameworks and policies like the Cambodia Digital Economy and Society Policy Framework 2021-2035 and the Cambodia Digital Government Policy 2022-2035.

Participants, including domestic and international experts, are convening to exchange insights on policy development, emerging digital trends, and effective strategies for expediting digital transformation.

Accompanying the forum, the Cambodia International Digital Government and Digital Technology Exhibition showcases the advancements in digital governance, platform development, and digital public services. This exhibition offers attendees a firsthand look at innovative technologies and services presented by leading companies, fostering a deeper understanding of the digital landscape’s future trajectory.
