In a significant move to enhance the skill set of Cambodia’s workforce and drive sustainable development, the European Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jutta Urpilainen, alongside representatives from European Union (EU) Member States and Cambodian Education Minister, Hang Chuon Naron, launched the ‘Education for Green and Digital Jobs’ initiative under the EU’s Global Gateway Flagship project.
This initiative is a concerted effort by the EU and its member countries to prepare Cambodian youth for the evolving job market, aligning with the nation’s industrial policy goals. It aims to develop a new generation of technicians equipped with the skills essential for advancing Cambodia’s green and digital objectives.
The program plans further investments in areas such as resilient infrastructure, research, and knowledge enhancement, facilitating people-to-people exchanges with the EU, implementing rights-based policy reforms, and fostering private sector participation. Additionally, it will provide scholarships for Cambodian university students to pursue STEM subjects, supported by government-led sustainable funding mechanisms.
Urpilainen, who has a background in education and youth advocacy, emphasized the EU’s dedication to aiding Cambodia’s progression from a least developed country to a middle-income economy. “Investing in the educational sector is akin to laying the foundation for a prosperous future. Our aim through this program is to arm the Cambodian youth with the knowledge and skills necessary for driving sustainable progress,” she stated.
Minister Naron shared a positive outlook on the program’s ability to draw European enterprises to Cambodia, offering high-quality job prospects in the emerging green and digital industries. He highlighted the broader impacts of such educational and skill development initiatives on national development and youth empowerment.
During the inauguration, Urpilainen, Naron, and delegates from EU nations, including the Czech Republic, France, and Hungary, visited Chumpou Voan General and Technical High School to interact with students and teachers, emphasizing the significance of STEM education and experiential learning through work placements.
This visit by Urpilainen to Cambodia, marking the beginning of her Southeast Asian tour, underscores the deepening partnership between the EU and Cambodia. It presents an avenue to review ongoing collaborations and introduce new ventures designed to strengthen investment ties between the EU and Cambodia.
The ‘Education for Green and Digital Jobs’ program stands as a key development in the EU-Cambodia partnership, symbolizing a mutual commitment to fostering sustainable growth, educational excellence, and economic prosperity.
