The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has announced that a feasibility study for the construction of Cambodia’s third expressway, linking the capital city of Phnom Penh to the cultural province of Siem Reap, will soon begin.

This new expressway is expected to bring numerous benefits to the country’s economy, such as reduced travel time and improved trade and business opportunities.

The current travel time by road between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap takes approximately six hours, but the new expressway is expected to cut this down to just two or three hours, making travel faster and more convenient. This improved connectivity is expected to have a positive impact on Cambodia’s economy, particularly in terms of tourism.

The easier and faster travel between the two cities is expected to increase the number of domestic and international visitors to the country, leading to a boost in the tourism industry and related businesses.

Additionally, the new expressway is expected to facilitate trade and commerce between the two regions, creating more job opportunities and increasing economic growth. With faster and easier access to the capital city, businesses in Siem Reap will be able to expand and reach new markets, while those in Phnom Penh will have better access to suppliers and customers in Siem Reap.

The construction of the third expressway is also expected to create employment opportunities for local people, with many Cambodians expected to benefit from job opportunities in construction and related industries. The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has requested the capital and provincial governors to coordinate with relevant units and local authorities in their respective jurisdictions to cooperate with the China Bridge and Road Corporation, which will conduct the study.

Cambodia’s first expressway, connecting Phnom Penh to the deep-sea port in Sihanoukville of Preah Sihanouk province, opened to the public on October 1, 2022, while the construction of the second expressway, from the capital to Bavet of Svay Rieng province, is scheduled to be built in 2023. The third expressway is expected to contribute to reducing travel time and facilitate trade and businesses, further boosting Cambodia’s economy.
