In a significant step towards bolstering Cambodia’s healthcare sector, the Ministry of Health has initiated discussions with International SOS, a reputable Singaporean medical company with nearly four decades of expertise. The meeting, held on September 19, saw Minister Chheang Ra and Sune Svenningsen, CEO of International SOS, along with their teams, convening at the ministry’s headquarters in Phnom Penh. The primary focus of their discussions revolved around the potential for collaboration in the areas of emergency medical services and disaster relief.

The Ministry of Health expressed its keen interest in exploring the various opportunities that could arise from partnering with International SOS. With a remarkable track record spanning 36 years, International SOS offers a comprehensive array of services, including risk assessment, healthcare support, medical assistance, emergency evacuation, and the extensive procurement of medicine and medical supplies.

Minister Chheang Ra extended a warm invitation to the Singaporean firm to delve into the possibility of cooperation. He emphasized the critical importance of being prepared to provide emergency services, especially during natural disasters that can have a profound impact on the well-being of the Cambodian people. Furthermore, Minister Ra proposed that International SOS play a pivotal role in nurturing Cambodia’s human resources. This strategic move aims to elevate public health standards and align with the ministry’s overarching goal of achieving broader healthcare coverage for the nation.

In response, Sune Svenningsen, the CEO of International SOS, affirmed the company’s commitment to expanding their cooperation in line with the Ministry of Health’s priorities. He expressed a sincere willingness to broaden the scope of their collaboration within the healthcare sector. Additionally, Svenningsen pledged to facilitate increased labor relations between the Singapore Business Association and Cambodia, further strengthening the ties between the two nations.

Ley Sopheap, President of the Medical Pharmacist and Dental Federation of Cambodia, shared his optimism regarding this promising collaboration. He emphasized the numerous benefits it could bring to Cambodia’s healthcare sector. Sopheap urged both parties to expedite negotiations and formalize their joint efforts at the earliest opportunity.

“When a company with such extensive experience collaborates with us, it will undoubtedly elevate the healthcare standards in Cambodia. This partnership not only promises to improve healthcare but also fosters friendship and strengthens relationships in this vital field,” Sopheap stated.

The discussions between the Ministry of Health and International SOS have set a positive tone for future cooperation. With the wealth of experience and expertise brought by International SOS, Cambodia’s healthcare sector is poised to make significant strides towards greater resilience, preparedness, and improved healthcare services for its citizens. The prospect of enhancing healthcare standards and forging enduring relationships is indeed a cause for optimism and hope.
