The recent visit of Cambodian President of the National Assembly, Khuon Sudary, to Thailand signifies a notable step in fortifying relations between the two neighboring countries. Invited by Thai National Assembly President, Wan Muhammad Noor Matha, this visit underscores the growing camaraderie and cooperation between Cambodia and Thailand.

During their discussions, both leaders emphasized the importance of transparency and the spirit of good neighborliness. They highlighted the significance of mutual respect and the independence of each nation. Focusing on the well-being of their citizens, Khuon Sudary urged for increased trade volume and the unhindered flow of cross-border goods. She proposed the removal of barriers, enhancement of connectivity, and improved border governance to facilitate these goals. Additionally, they explored ways to attract international tourists under the “Two Kingdoms, One Goal” strategy, which complements Thailand’s “Six Countries, One Destination” initiative.

Khuon Sudary stressed that the relationship between the National Assemblies of Cambodia and Thailand is deeply rooted in people-to-people connections, bringing numerous advantages, especially in the context of today’s dynamic global landscape. With geopolitical tensions threatening the global order, parliamentary diplomacy is pivotal in ensuring peace, stability, and sustainable development for their citizens.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to fostering friendship and cooperation across various facets of their partnership. They deliberated on enhancing parliamentary relations and identified new mechanisms to boost trade, tourism, and economic growth, with a particular focus on improving the quality of life for their people.

A significant outcome of this high-level visit was the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two National Assemblies, updating the previous agreement from 2007 to better align with current realities and social development needs. This MoU aims to foster a more active and comprehensive partnership through parliamentary diplomacy. The two assemblies will support each other by sharing best practices, exchanging valuable resources, and collaborating in mutually beneficial areas to promote peace, prosperity, and progress. They also agreed to support each other in regional and international forums.

In its seventh mandate, the National Assembly of Cambodia is dedicated to strengthening and expanding parliamentary diplomacy, benefiting people both within and beyond the region. This commitment reflects the shared vision of Cambodia and Thailand to work together towards a more prosperous and harmonious future for their citizens.
