Cambodian Prime Minister Proposes Dedicated Media Task Force for Effective Communication

In a move to enhance effective communication and address the imbalanced dissemination of information, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has recommended the establishment of a specialized media task force. The proposed task force would work closely with capital-provincial broadcasters, ensuring swift and effective responses to both positive and negative stories. This initiative aims to rectify the common issue of negative information gaining undue attention, while positive developments often go unnoticed.

Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet made this suggestion during the closing of the annual meeting of the Ministry of Information, held at Sokha Phnom Penh Hotel on January 23. He emphasized that the Department of Information, acting as the Information Secretary of the Ministry of Information, should not merely serve as an information collector and distributor. Instead, it should take on a proactive role in managing stories to prevent unnecessary escalations.

The premier stressed the importance of resolving disputes at various levels, avoiding the need to elevate every issue to the national level. Each ministry and institution should have the authority to promptly disseminate and clarify information, addressing uncertainties and correcting inaccuracies immediately. This proactive approach to information management is crucial for effective communication.

Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet highlighted the challenge of promoting achievements at the provincial level, often hindered by poor organization and limited publicity. He recommended the creation of small working groups in each province to manage these matters efficiently. The primary goal is to ensure that positive news is not overshadowed by sensationalized negative reports.

The premier underscored the importance of consistently shaping public opinion, emphasizing that positive actions must be actively communicated to the public. Negative information tends to spread quickly, leading to a skewed perception where the public predominantly hears about negative aspects. The government recognizes that what people see and hear significantly influences their thoughts and perceptions.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet called upon provincial governors to collaborate with the National Committee for the Coordination of Public Information and the Ministry of Information to establish and implement this mechanism effectively. By doing so, Cambodia aims to create a more balanced and informed public discourse, ensuring that both positive and negative information receive appropriate attention.

This proposed media task force represents a significant step toward more effective and balanced information dissemination in Cambodia, ultimately fostering better public understanding and engagement.
