During a notable ASEAN event in Phnom Penh, hosted by the Cambodian Center for Regional Studies, Indonesia and the United States took pivotal roles in a roundtable discussion titled ‘Striving for ASEAN Community Vision 2045’. This gathering saw the participation of the Indonesian and American ambassadors to Cambodia, who engaged in a dialogue about the future direction of the ASEAN bloc.
The discussion, led by Pou Sothirak, a Distinguished Senior Advisor at CCRS, featured insights from W. Patrick Murphy, the US Ambassador to Cambodia, and Santo Darmosumarto, the Indonesian Ambassador. They each highlighted their country’s strategic priorities for ASEAN and contemplated the path forward.
Ambassador Santo emphasized the importance of regional collaboration within ASEAN, particularly in light of the 65th anniversary of Indonesia-Cambodia diplomatic relations. He highlighted the potential for Indonesia to collaborate with Cambodia in fostering greater regional integration and community building within ASEAN.
Vichet Lor, Vice President of the Cambodia-Chinese Commerce Association, commended the session as both enlightening and educational, noting the ambassadors’ rich diplomatic insights into Southeast Asia and their collective vision for the ASEAN Community Vision 2045.
Indonesia’s role is pivotal in supporting Cambodia’s aim to achieve high-income status by 2050. The historical ties between Cambodia and Indonesia date back to the era of King Jayavarmam II of the Khmer Empire and continue to strengthen through high-level exchanges and bilateral cooperation. The forthcoming Joint Commission on Bilateral Cooperation, set to convene at the Foreign Minister level, underscores this growing partnership.
As Southeast Asia’s largest economy and a rising global market player, Indonesia is keen on deepening business relations with Cambodia, particularly in infrastructure, energy, and global supply chains, aiming for a more balanced trade relationship.
Furthermore, Indonesia is set to become an attractive destination for Cambodian students studying abroad, fostering youth engagement and collaboration between the two nations.
The United States, recognizing Cambodia’s successful hosting of ASEAN 2022, values its relationship with Southeast Asia and anticipates Cambodia reaping significant benefits from enhanced bilateral trade with Indonesia. With Indonesia expected to become the world’s fourth-largest economy by 2045, the prospects for Cambodia’s economic and diplomatic engagement within the region appear promising.
