As of May 14, Cambodia has demonstrated a remarkable improvement in its performance at the 32nd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, winning a total of 228 medals – 65 gold, 61 silver, and 102 bronze. This is a significant increase compared to the 31st SEA Games in Vietnam in 2022, where Cambodia secured only 63 medals – 9 gold, 13 silver, and 41 bronze.

The Cambodian SEA Games Organising Committee (CAMSOC) announced that Cambodia now ranks fourth in the Medal Table, behind Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia. Vietnam leads with 291 medals (106 gold, 90 silver, and 95 bronze), followed by Thailand with 243 medals (90 gold, 65 silver, and 88 bronze), and Indonesia with 208 medals (67 gold, 61 silver, and 80 bronze).

The 32nd SEA Games is being hosted by Cambodia for the first time in 64 years, from May 5 to 17, under the motto “Sport: Living in Peace.” A 1,203-strong Cambodian delegation, including 896 athletes, is participating in the event.

Cambodia’s improved performance at the SEA Games can be attributed to several factors:

Increased Investment in Sports Infrastructure and Training

The Cambodian government and private sector have been investing in the development of sports infrastructure, such as stadiums, training centers, and sports complexes. This has provided athletes with better facilities and resources to enhance their skills and performance.

Enhanced Coaching and Training Programs

Cambodia has focused on improving coaching and training programs for its athletes. By hiring experienced coaches and trainers, both local and international, the nation has been able to provide its athletes with the knowledge and guidance needed to compete at a higher level.

Stronger Focus on Sports Development

The Cambodian government has made sports development a priority, recognizing the potential of sports to promote national unity, social cohesion, and international recognition. This has led to the implementation of various initiatives and programs aimed at identifying and nurturing young talent, as well as providing support to athletes in their pursuit of excellence.

Greater Participation and Exposure

Cambodian athletes have been participating in more regional and international competitions, gaining valuable experience and exposure to higher levels of competition. This has helped them better prepare for the SEA Games and other major sporting events.

Cambodia’s impressive performance up until May 14 at the 32nd SEA Games is a testament to the nation’s dedication and commitment to sports development. With continued investment in infrastructure, training, and support for athletes, Cambodia is well on its way to becoming a formidable force in the world of sports.
