In a significant move to bolster diplomatic and economic relations, Australia has committed to working closely with Cambodia on ASEAN priorities, as announced by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. This announcement came during bilateral discussions with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on the sidelines of the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit held in Melbourne on March 5.
Prime Minister Albanese, after the meeting, took to social media to express the mutual benefits derived from a stable and thriving region, indicating a productive dialogue with Prime Minister Hun Manet. The Cambodian leader reciprocated by highlighting Australia’s role in Cambodia’s journey of recovery from the brutal reign of the Khmer Rouge, praising the nation for its “marvellous resilience”.
The two leaders also celebrated over seven decades of diplomatic relations between their countries, recognizing the profound benefits that their partnership has brought to their people. They pledged to further enhance this relationship, acknowledging Australia’s pivotal support in various sectors like agriculture, health, mine clearance, and defense which significantly contributed to Cambodia’s socio-economic development.
Further solidifying their commitment, Prime Minister Hun Manet extended an invitation to his Australian counterpart to visit Cambodia, which was warmly accepted by Albanese. The discussions also led to the unveiling of a substantial $2 billion business engagement package aimed at fostering economic growth and development within the region.
This ambitious initiative, facilitated through the Southeast Asia Investment Financing Facility (SEAIFF) and managed by Export Finance Australia, was introduced by Albanese while addressing a summit of CEOs from Australia and Southeast Asia. The package is designed to provide financial support in the form of loans, guarantees, equity, and insurance for projects that enhance trade and investment between Australia and Southeast Asia, with a keen focus on clean energy transition and infrastructure development.
The engagement aligns with the strategic recommendations from the “Invested: Australia’s Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040” report, aiming to deepen Australia’s economic ties with the region and promote shared prosperity. This move not only reinforces the economic bridge between Australia and ASEAN countries but also highlights the importance of collaborative growth and sustainable development in the face of global challenges.
Australia’s trade with ASEAN, which reached $178 billion in 2022, underscores the significance of this relationship, marking a new chapter in the long-standing partnership between Australia and Cambodia. The commitment from both nations to strengthen trade, economic, education, labor, and defense links, accompanied by the substantial financial package, sets a promising path toward a prosperous and interconnected future for the region.
