In a momentous development for Cambodia’s infrastructure and economic landscape, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has called upon the nation to rally in support of the ambitious Funan Techo Canal project. His appeal was made during the inaugural ceremony of the Kampot multi-purpose port on Thursday, June 6, signifying a leap forward in the nation’s maritime and inland waterway development efforts.

Addressing the occasion, Prime Minister Hun Manet highlighted the transformative potential of the Funan Techo Canal project. Spanning around 180 kilometres and connecting various waterways from rivers to the sea across Kandal, Takeo, Kampot, and Kep provinces, this USD 1.7 billion project stands as a significant stride towards enhancing Cambodia’s connectivity and accessibility. “The Funan Techo canal project is not just about infrastructure development. It’s a collective venture that may necessitate sacrifices from impacted communities, but promises widespread benefits, including unfettered water access for travel throughout the year for residents along its route,” remarked Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet.

Simultaneously, the Cambodian Prime Minister shed light on the criticality of the newly inaugurated Kampot multi-purpose port. Positioned to complement the existing maritime infrastructure alongside Preah Sihanouk Autonomous Port and Phnom Penh Autonomous Port, the Kampot port is slated to become another vital deep-sea port in Cambodia. “This new port is a crucial conduit for our maritime transport, poised to amplify trade, stimulate economic growth in Kampot, and contribute to the socioeconomic development of Cambodia,” articulated Hun Manet.

This strategic move aligns perfectly with the Royal Government’s commitment to prioritizing the development of the port sector. By continuously increasing investment budgets, mobilizing financing, and enhancing usage efficiency, Cambodia aims to fortify its port infrastructure, thereby elevating its competitive stance globally.

Expressing his gratitude, Prime Minister Hun Manet commended the efforts of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, Kampot Provincial Administration, and other relevant entities for their collaboration in achieving this milestone. He also acknowledged Kampot Logistics and Port Co Ltd for their pivotal investment, contributing to the Royal Government’s Pentagonal Strategy Phase One aimed at fostering the inland waterway and port transport sectors towards achieving sustainable progress.
