Direct Flight Between Siem Reap and Phu Quoc Island Considered

Cambodia and Vietnam are exploring the possibility of introducing a direct flight between Siem Reap and Phu Quoc Island to enhance connectivity between the two nations.

Recently, Thong Khon, Cambodia’s Minister of Tourism, and Nguyen Van Hung, Vietnam’s Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, discussed the potential flight route during a meeting. Additionally, they deliberated on connecting the tourist ports of Kampot and Phu Quoc Island to facilitate increased tourism between the two countries via waterways.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by the ministers last weekend, focusing on collaborative promotion of sustainable tourism. This followed the Vietnamese minister’s attendance at the opening ceremonies of the 32nd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in Cambodia.

As part of the MoU, Cambodia and Vietnam will work together to develop tourism packages for both countries, involving the active participation of the private sector. With the concept of “Two Countries, One Destination,” they aim to boost bilateral tourism and attract visitors from other countries.

The agreement also includes exchanging tourism market information, sharing best practices in tourism, and organizing study tours for tourism officials. Furthermore, joint marketing efforts will be made to fully restore tourism activities between the two countries in the post-Covid-19 era.

Delegates from both nations will attend tourism fairs and international tourism events, in addition to promoting tourism investment through forums and events. Tourism businesses will be encouraged to collaborate on creating new and unique tours catering to the needs of tourists from both countries and beyond. Moreover, these enterprises will receive support to participate in tourism fairs organized by each country.

On May 5, prior to the MoU signing, Hung met with Hang Chuon Naron, Cambodia’s Minister of Education, Youth, and Sports, to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation in physical education and sports. A resulting agreement was signed to foster collaboration and exchange in these fields between bordering localities of the two countries.
