Cambodian Foreign Minister Sok Chenda Sophea is preparing to head a delegation for the upcoming Ninth Mekong-Lancang Foreign Ministers Meeting. Scheduled for 16 August 2024, this significant event will be hosted in Chiang Mai, Thailand, following an official invitation from the Thai Foreign Minister, Maris Sangiampongsa.
This year’s gathering is themed “Towards a Safer and Cleaner Mekong-Lancang Community,” aiming to spotlight the collaborative efforts and forward momentum of Mekong-Lancang Cooperation (MLC). The forum is an essential platform for member countries to assess the progression and impact of the MLC mechanism, particularly following the Fourth MLC Leaders Meeting which took place in December of the previous year. Participants will grapple with the region’s pressing challenges, seek inventive solutions, and deliberate on the execution of the Five-Year Plan of Action on the MLC (2023-2027), all with the goal of nurturing the welfare and prospects of the Mekong sub-region’s inhabitants.
Amidst the official agenda, Minister Sok Chenda Sophea will engage in activities aimed at fostering diplomatic relations and mutual understanding. This includes a courtesy visit to Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin alongside fellow MLC Foreign Ministers, underscoring the spirit of cooperation and goodwill that characterizes the meeting. Additionally, the Cambodian Foreign Minister is slated for bilateral discussions with his counterparts from other nations. These conversations are anticipated to strengthen ties and broaden cooperation within both bilateral and multilateral frameworks, reinforcing the Mekong-Lancang region’s collective efforts towards sustainable development and regional prosperity.
This assembly represents a pivotal moment for Mekong-Lancang countries to come together, share insights, and strategize on the future direction of the sub-region. Through collaborative dialogue and shared initiatives, the participating nations aim to navigate the challenges of today while laying the groundwork for a resilient and thriving Mekong-Lancang community.
