Strengthening Collaboration in Humanitarian Mine Action: Cambodia-Azerbaijan Talks

by TBC

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Cambodia served as the setting for a pivotal meeting on the afternoon of 26 August 2024, underlining the growing collaborative efforts in humanitarian initiatives between Cambodia and Azerbaijan. His Excellency KE Sovann, Under-Secretary of State of the Ministry, welcomed Mr. Vugar Suleymanov, the esteemed Chairman of the Board of the Mine Action Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan (ANAMA), to engage in dialogue geared towards a critical mission: bolstering cooperation in the field of humanitarian mine action.

The gathering spotlighted a grave and enduring problem that afflicts many regions around the globe: the prevalence of landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW). These lethal remnants continue to pose significant threats to both safety and development in affected areas long after conflicts have ceased. Thus, the impetus for the discussions centered on the pursuit of strategies and tactics to alleviate the impact of this scourge, drawing from the expertise and experiences of both nations.

The discourse between His Excellency KE Sovann and Mr. Vugar Suleymanov sought to lay a foundation for stronger ties and deeper mutual understanding. As they shared insights, the crucial nature of international cooperation in humanitarian efforts became ever more apparent. Cambodia, with its own harrowing history of landmine contamination, has made remarkable strides in mine clearance and victim assistance, while ANAMA has emerged as a critical force in addressing similar challenges within Azerbaijan and beyond.

Both representatives delved into potential avenues for joint initiatives, including the sharing of technical knowledge, the development of capacity-building programs, and the implementation of advanced technologies in mine action operations. The goal of these cooperative endeavors was clear: to create a consolidated front against the threat that landmines and ERW represent, effectively saving lives and restoring swathes of land to safe and productive use.

This critical meeting between Cambodia and Azerbaijan thus set the stage for future collaborative projects and marked a significant step forward in international joint efforts to conquer the enduring challenge of landmine and ERW clearance. The shared commitment to humanitarian goals and the dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens stand as the cornerstone of this evolving partnership.
