Cambodia mourns the loss of a pivotal figure in its political landscape as the Ministry of the Royal Palace announced the death of Kong Sam Ol, with profound sadness. The esteemed political veteran, adored for his lifelong dedication to his nation, passed away on September 2, 2024, succumbing to an illness at the venerable age of 94.

Kong Sam Ol’s career was marked by a series of eminent roles that showcased his enduring commitment to his country. From as early as 1986, he began serving as the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, a position he filled until 1989. Following this period, he represented the Kampong Chhnang constituency as a lawmaker, further solidifying his place as a stalwart in Cambodia’s governance landscape.

It was in 1998 that he undertook the role that would define much of his career, as he was appointed Minister of the Royal Palace—a role he would honorably fulfill until his last days. His tenure is recognized for its steadfast dedication to the cultural and ceremonial heartbeat of the nation, as he acted as the chairman of the National Committee for Organizing National and International Festivals. Moreover, his compassion and public service extended beyond politics into humanitarian efforts, where he served as the vice president of the Cambodian Red Cross.

Earlier in the year, the country had experienced the loss of another prominent spiritual leader, the Great Supreme Patriarch Venerable Tep Vong, at age 93. His passing, similar to that of Kong Sam Ol, left a void in the spiritual and ceremonial foundation of Cambodian society.

The news of Kong Sam Ol’s passing has led to an outpour of tribute, particularly from leading figures in Cambodian government. Prime Minister Hun Manet, along with Senate president Hun Sen, expressed profound sympathy and respect, sharing their thoughts on this significant loss through their social media platforms.

Prime Minister Hun Manet, articulating his deep sorrow, highlighted the noble traits of the departed, describing him as a figure of great esteem and honor. He praised Kong Sam Ol’s relentless contributions that spanned decades, dedicated to upholding national independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and for playing an instrumental role in preserving the nation’s monarchy and cultural values. According to Hun Manet, Sam Ol’s efforts were unparalleled in safeguarding the stature of Cambodia’s monarchy and promoting its image on the global stage.

The state and citizenry are preparing to bid farewell to Kong Sam Ol, as his body lies in solemn repose at a funeral home located in the Prampi Makara district of Phnom Penh. This marks a time of national grief and reflection for a man whose life work has left an indelible mark on the country.

Representatives from the National Committee for Organizing National and International Festivals, including the secretary-general Chhin Ketana, have withheld remarks regarding the passing of their chairman. This sentiment of privacy and respect was shared by Kuy Sophal, senior minister-in-charge of General Affairs at the Ministry of the Royal Palace. Kong Sam Ol’s daughter was reached out for a statement but has yet to offer a public response.

The nation of Cambodia thus turns a solemn page in its history, honoring a man who devoted his existence to the betterment of his fellow citizens, bolstered its governance, and deeply influenced its political tapestry. Kong Sam Ol’s legacy will be remembered for generations as one of unwavering patriotism and a life replete with distinguished service.
