The Minister of Commerce, H.E. Mrs. Cham Nimul, has voiced strong support for the expansion of Cambodia’s fruit and agricultural product processing facilities, framing the move as a vital step toward diversifying the Kingdom’s export markets and enhancing the competitiveness of its agricultural sector on the global stage.
Speaking during a meeting at the Ministry of Commerce on August 18 with delegations from Long Wo Agriculture (Cambodia) Co., Ltd. and Zhongbao (Cambodia) Food Co., Ltd., the Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to creating a stronger, more resilient export-driven economy. The two companies presented their plans to scale up production capacity in order to target high-potential markets such as China, the United States, and Europe.
Private Sector Collaboration and Expansion Plans
During the discussion, the delegations highlighted progress in agricultural processing and export activities while requesting further ministry support to facilitate their expansion strategies. Their proposals focus on modernizing facilities, increasing value-added processing, and adopting higher international standards to ensure Cambodian products meet global consumer demands.
H.E. Mrs. Cham Nimul praised these initiatives, noting that robust private sector growth is central to strengthening Cambodia’s export base. She underlined that the country’s agricultural potential is vast, but to fully unlock it, investment in advanced processing facilities and logistics systems is necessary to move beyond raw commodity exports.
Leveraging Free Trade Agreements and Policy Support
The Minister reaffirmed the Ministry of Commerce’s commitment to supporting businesses by leveraging Cambodia’s expanding network of free trade agreements (FTAs). These agreements, she explained, present unprecedented opportunities for Cambodian exporters by reducing trade barriers and opening preferential access to some of the world’s largest markets.
She also detailed key government initiatives—including trade facilitation measures, export incentives, and policy frameworks—designed to strengthen production and processing capabilities. Such measures are aimed at positioning Cambodia as a reliable supplier of high-quality agricultural products with strong market diversification.
Building a Resilient Agricultural Export Sector
A core theme of the meeting was the critical importance of public-private collaboration. H.E. Mrs. Cham Nimul stressed that building a competitive and resilient agricultural export sector requires coordinated efforts between the government and private enterprises. Enhancing the capacity of producers, processors, and exporters will not only expand Cambodia’s market share but also provide new opportunities for farmers and rural communities, ensuring that economic gains are widely shared.
By supporting advanced processing facilities, Cambodia can increase the value of its agricultural exports, reduce post-harvest losses, and meet international quality standards, which are essential for accessing premium markets. The Minister concluded by reiterating the government’s determination to back initiatives that create sustainable growth, uplift local producers, and solidify Cambodia’s role in global agricultural trade.
