Phnom Penh, Cambodia – Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet has highlighted urban development as a critical factor in strengthening Cambodia’s tourism sector, stating that improvements in city infrastructure, public services and environmental quality will support sustainable tourism growth.
Speaking to mark National Clean City Day, the Prime Minister emphasised that vibrant, clean and well-planned urban centres are essential not only for residents but also for visitors, adding to the appeal of Cambodia’s cultural, historical and natural attractions. Officials said urban centres play multifaceted roles as hubs for leisure, events, commerce and cultural exchange, which together underpin the tourism economy.
Hun Manet noted that tourism growth can, in turn, generate economic opportunities that attract investment and encourage broader urban improvements. He stressed that ensuring clean and green urban environments, enhanced infrastructure and well-connected services are priorities in government planning, as these features help cities become more attractive to both domestic and international travellers.
Key aspects of the government’s urban development focus include expanding green spaces, enhancing mobility and transport links, and preserving cultural heritage sites as part of city planning efforts. Officials also highlighted the importance of protecting historic urban heritage as an asset that draws visitors while contributing to local identity and community pride.
Urban development strategies are aligned with broader efforts to grow tourism sustainably, with policymakers and industry stakeholders emphasising the need for collaboration across sectors. Investments in infrastructure, services and environmental management are expected to support Cambodia’s tourism competitiveness as global travel continues to evolve in the post-pandemic context.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustaining a clean, safe and welcoming environment in urban centres, noting that these conditions are central to enhancing visitor experiences and supporting long-term socio-economic development.
