Construction of the new Bassac River bridge connecting Chak Angre Krom and Prek Pra has reached 73 percent completion as of the end of May 2026, marking a significant milestone in one of Phnom Penh’s most anticipated urban transport projects.
The Ministry of Public Works and Transport confirmed the progress update on Monday, noting that the project has advanced steadily since construction officially broke ground on February 19, 2024.
Where the Project Stands: Key Construction Figures
All foundation and substructure works have been fully completed, along with the superstructure of the connecting bridge. Work on the main bridge superstructure is now 67.3 percent complete.
Of the 49 box girders planned on the right side of the bridge, 36 have been finished. On the left side, 30 of the 49 girders are complete. The associated road network, including connecting segments and ramp girders, has reached 48.4 percent completion.
In a logistical milestone, transportation of all 96 bridge beams from the western to the eastern side of the river has been completed. Workers are now carrying out concrete pouring to connect individual bridge sections — a critical phase in closing the crossing.
Quality Standards and Contractor Performance
An evaluation team has praised Shanghai Construction Company, the contractor for the project, for executing works in accordance with technical standards and contractual requirements, while maintaining both quality and aesthetic considerations throughout the build.
With the rainy season now underway, project managers have intensified on-site safety measures. These include the installation of additional protective water cushions along the river to ensure the safety of passing river traffic during the remaining construction phases.
Cambodia’s Seventh Bassac River Crossing
Once completed, the Chak Angre Krom–Prek Pra crossing will become the seventh bridge spanning the Bassac River in the greater Phnom Penh area, joining a network of existing crossings that includes Koh Pich Bridge, Koh Norea Bridge, the two Preah Monivong bridges, Samrong Bridge, Koh Anlong Chen Bridge, and Koh Thom Bridge.
The new bridge is expected to play a meaningful role in easing traffic congestion and strengthening connectivity in the capital’s rapidly expanding southern districts — areas that have seen significant residential and commercial development in recent years but remain underserved by cross-river infrastructure.
Part of a Broader Infrastructure Push
The Bassac River bridge is one of many large-scale infrastructure investments reshaping connectivity across Cambodia. The country has committed to an ambitious programme of road and bridge development as part of its long-term economic growth strategy.
Earlier this year, the government inaugurated the USD 37 million Morodok Techo Flyover in the capital, with Prime Minister Hun Manet reaffirming the government’s commitment to expanding cross-river and intra-city infrastructure. The Chak Angre Krom–Prek Pra bridge forms part of this broader vision to reduce traffic pressure on existing crossings and open up new development corridors in Phnom Penh’s south.

Cambodia’s infrastructure investment agenda also extends well beyond the capital. In May 2025, Bridge No. 28 — the tallest bridge in Cambodia — officially opened to the public in Pursat Province as part of the National Road No. 10 project, underlining the scale of construction activity underway across the country.
