PHNOM PENH — Cambodia is expanding its regional financial footprint after establishing bilateral cross-border QR payment linkages with five key ASEAN member states: Lao PDR, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Spearheaded by the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) utilizing the Bakong platform and the standardized KHQR system, the digital payments rollout positions Cambodia among Southeast Asia’s most integrated financial connectivity hubs.
Seamless Local Currency Retail Transactions
The interoperable digital payment network allows Cambodian travelers and international tourists to perform real-time retail transactions using local currencies by scanning standard national QR codes across partner merchant networks.
With five active bilateral connections in place, Cambodia ties with Singapore in total ASEAN cross-border payment linkages, placing it just behind Thailand in regional digital financial integration.
Key Benefits of Regional QR Integration:
- Lower Transaction Costs: Reduces dependence on traditional foreign currency exchange mechanisms and wire transfers.
- Boost for MSMEs: Simplifies payments for small merchants, cross-border traders, and local enterprises.
- Enhanced Tourism: Facilitates instant, cashless purchases for international visitors traveling across participating ASEAN nations.
Milestone Ahead of 59th ASEAN Day
Highlighting the accomplishment ahead of the upcoming 59th ASEAN Day, the ASEAN Secretariat noted that cross-border QR connectivity provides tangible financial convenience for everyday consumers, merchants, and tourists throughout the region.
“The continued expansion of payment connectivity reflects ASEAN’s commitment towards inclusive and user-centric payment solutions that will foster inclusive growth and economic participation across the region,” the ASEAN Secretariat stated. “As we journey towards the 59th ASEAN Day, this milestone reminds us that ASEAN’s digital future is about creating practical connections that people can experience in their daily lives.”
By streamlining retail payments and expanding the reach of the KHQR system, Cambodia continues to build toward a seamless, borderless digital economy across Southeast Asia.
