PHNOM PENH — Cambodia is intensifying efforts to attract further foreign direct investment into its automotive industry, with the Royal Government actively encouraging leading Chinese automaker BYD to expand its electric mobility footprint within the Kingdom.
Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice-Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) Sun Chanthol urged the electric vehicle giant to accelerate industrial commitments and explore additional assembly capacity during high-level consultative engagements. The strategic push aligns with Cambodia’s ambition to position itself as a regional manufacturing and assembly corridor for clean-energy vehicles across Southeast Asia.
Expanding BYD Investment in EV Sector and Domestic Infrastructure
Government officials emphasized that greater BYD investment in EV sector development directly complements the Royal Government of Cambodia’s National Policy on Electric Vehicle Development 2024–2030. Under this policy, the administration is deploying structured fiscal benefits, streamlined licensing through the CDC’s one-stop regulatory mechanisms, and targeted tariff relief under the Law on Investment to attract global automotive leaders.
Beyond vehicle assembly, discussions focused on establishing localized supply chains, including components manufacturing, technical training centers for domestic automotive engineers, and widespread commercial charging network integration. Chanthol reaffirmed that Cambodia offers international manufacturers a pro-business environment, comprehensive logistical links via deep-sea ports and expressways, and direct access to tariff-free export networks across the ASEAN economic bloc.
The initiative to secure more high-value commitments follows BYD’s ongoing domestic expansion projects, designed to serve growing local market demand for affordable battery electric vehicles while building a competitive export hub. Authorities underscored that collaborative industrial projects between Cambodia and global clean-tech leaders remain central to the nation’s broader industrial diversification and green growth strategies.
