On Russia Day, Russian Ambassador to Cambodia, Anatoly Borovik, reaffirmed the commitment to deepen trade, economic, and business relationships between Russia and Cambodia. This declaration came during the commemorative state reception at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra, underscoring 68 years of diplomatic relations characterized by mutual respect and progressive collaborations.
The event, held on June 11, was marked by the attendance of notable Cambodian dignitaries, including Khuon Sudary, President of the National Assembly of Cambodia. Representatives from the executive and legislative branches, as well as figures from the cultural sectors, academia, business communities, and diplomatic corps, also graced the occasion. The reception not only highlighted the historical bonds but also set the stage for future engagements.
During his address, Ambassador Borovik portrayed Russia as a steadfast supporter of developing nations, advocating for equity and sovereign equality. He emphasized Russia’s opposition to neocolonial dynamics and underscored the country’s dedication to fostering relationships based on non-interference in domestic matters.
“Russia is increasingly making its presence felt in the Asia-Pacific region, thereby fortifying its ties with Southeast Asian nations, especially Cambodia,” Borovik asserted. He believes that Russia’s rich historical insights and constructive diplomacy are vital in unlocking new avenues for practical cooperation that will benefit both nations reciprocally.
Reflecting on the historic contributions, the ambassador highlighted the pivotal role of the former Soviet Union in the reconstruction of Cambodia following the oppressive Khmer Rouge regime. The ongoing contributions of institutions like the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital and the Institute of Technology were praised for their enduring service to the Cambodian people.
Borovik also spoke about Cambodia’s role as the ASEAN Country-Coordinator for the Russia-ASEAN Strategic Dialogue Partnership, a position Cambodia has held effectively, with the 5th anniversary of this role being celebrated in autumn 2023. Additionally, the recent initiation of the Russia-ASEAN Digital Partnership last February stands as a significant milestone towards enhanced cooperation in technology and innovation sectors.
