The World Bank has announced the appointment of Tania Meyer as its new Country Manager for Cambodia. In her new role, Meyer, hailing from France, will steer the World Bank’s collaborations with various stakeholders in Cambodia, including the government, private sector, development partners, and civil society organizations.
Stationed at the World Bank’s office in Phnom Penh, Meyer will manage a considerable development project portfolio valued at USD 1.7 billion. These projects are essential for bolstering various sectors within Cambodia, and Meyer’s guidance will be crucial in ensuring their successful implementation and impact.
Among her primary responsibilities, Meyer will oversee the finalization and enactment of the World Bank Group’s forthcoming Country Partnership Framework with Cambodia for the period of 2024-2029. This new framework is a strategic agenda aimed at enhancing the nation’s development through a series of targeted initiatives. Set to commence in the upcoming months, the program will focus on improving human capital and increasing economic competitiveness. This will be achieved through better access to quality early childhood education and health services, creating superior job opportunities, and enhancing resilience for the country’s vulnerable populations.
Expressing her sentiments on the appointment, Meyer stated, “I am honored to take on this new role at this significant time in Cambodia’s evolution. I look forward to aiding Cambodia in achieving its high-reaching developmental objectives, which aim to enrich human capital, job creation, and climate initiatives, ultimately benefiting all Cambodians, especially children, women, and vulnerable groups.”
Bringing over 15 years of experience within the World Bank to the table, Meyer previously held the position of Country Manager for Yemen and served as the Resident Representative for Jordan. Her extensive background also includes engagement with various international and local NGOs across Asia and Africa, contributing to projects in countries like Vietnam and China.
Meyer is set to replace Maryam Salim, who, after a successful three-year tenure in Phnom Penh, will take on new challenges as the Country Director for Ethiopia, Sudan, South Sudan, and Eritrea.
This leadership change marks a dynamic phase in the World Bank’s efforts in Cambodia, with a strong focus on sustainable development and collaborative progress under Tania Meyer’s guidance.
