In a move to foster international relationships and cultural exchange, Cambodia recently initiated a unique culinary diplomacy program aiming to spotlight its rich food traditions and encourage economic growth. The National Institute of Diplomacy and International Relations partnered with the Asia Foundation to launch a nuanced approach to diplomacy that leverages one of the most universal forms of communication and understanding: food.
From September 19 to 21, 2024, a special three-day training course titled “Cambodian Culinary Diplomacy: Promoting Friendship and Cooperation Through Foods” was held. The event was graced by the presence of Sok Chenda Sophea, the Cambodian Foreign Minister. It gathered members from various foreign diplomatic missions and international organizations both at locations in Phnom Penh and Kampot Province alongside senior officials from the ministry.
During the opening ceremony, Minister Sok Chenda Sophea highlighted the importance of the culinary course against the backdrop of Cambodia’s broader economic initiatives. He reflected on the launch of the country’s Economic Diplomacy Strategy in 2021, under the guidance of the Royal Government, aimed at propelling the nation toward significant economic milestones targeted for 2030 and 2050. The minister emphasized that the program served as an illustrative approach to economic diplomacy, with culinary arts playing a central role in elevating Cambodia’s status internationally.
Participants of the training course were given the exceptional opportunity to delve into the intricacies of Cambodian cuisine with the guidance of two prominent chefs, Ros Rotanak, popularly known as Chef Nak, and Oknha Luu Meng. Their expertise offered a window into a culinary heritage that spans thousands of years, marked by flavors that capture the essence of Cambodia’s history and its people’s relationship with their land.
The seminar’s curriculum was designed not just to teach cooking techniques but to create a comprehensive cultural immersion. This was exemplified by a planned field trip to Kampot Province, a region known for its top-tier pepper production and the picturesque splendors of Bokor Mountain. The provincial governor, Mao Thonin, provided attendees with insights into the area’s investment potential within key sectors such as agriculture and tourism, illustrating the intersection of culinary arts with economic opportunity.
