Cambodia is boosting its sustainable tourism efforts as Knai Bang Chatt by Kep West launches a unique initiative that ties 2026 guest stays to mangrove restoration and improved coastal resilience. The program, called The Regenerative Stay, aims to align tourism growth with measurable environmental benefits and enhance visitor engagement.
Under the year-long initiative, every booking at Knai Bang Chatt in 2026 will fund the planting of ten mangrove seedlings along Cambodia’s Kep coastline. The project is conducted in partnership with local community groups and conservation organizations, ensuring that restoration efforts are both community-led and scientifically supported.
Mangrove ecosystems are crucial for coastal tourism and climate resilience. They help prevent coastal erosion, protect shorelines from storm surges, support marine biodiversity, and capture carbon dioxide. Each mangrove tree can absorb approximately 308 kilograms of CO₂ over a 25-year period, meaning ten trees could offset more than 7.7 tonnes of CO₂ throughout their lifetime.
Participation in The Regenerative Stay is automatic for all bookings made in 2026, making environmental contribution a seamless part of the travel experience. The program allows for measurable and scalable impact as visitor numbers increase.
Local community involvement is a key aspect of the initiative, with members helping to plant and maintain the mangrove seedlings. This approach not only promotes environmental stewardship but also supports livelihood opportunities linked to conservation work.
The initiative is part of Cambodia’s broader tourism strategy, which emphasizes eco-tourism and community engagement as drivers of sustainable growth. The tourism sector is recovering strongly, with ongoing projects focusing on diversification, green initiatives, and infrastructure development to enhance the country’s appeal to international visitors.
As sustainable travel becomes increasingly important to global tourists, Cambodia’s integration of tourism with environmental restoration reflects evolving industry trends. The Regenerative Stay positions Kep as a model for responsible coastal tourism while reinforcing the connection between conservation, community benefit, and visitor experience.
