Cambodia has taken a significant step toward sustainable waste management with the groundbreaking of a new PET recycling factory that will convert used plastic bottles into polyethylene terephthalate (PET) material for the packaging industry. The ceremony for the recycling plant took place at the Pursat Special Economic Zone in Krakor district, with officials and stakeholders from the government and industry attending. The project is being developed by A1‑Plastic, a company active in plastic production and recycling in Cambodia.
The factory is designed to process post-consumer plastic bottles and manufacture PET resin, which is widely used in food and beverage packaging. By recycling used plastics, the plant is expected to reduce waste and support national objectives to promote a circular economy and efficient use of resources. Economic officials noted that this investment aligns with Cambodia’s strategy to attract environmentally responsible industries, expand domestic manufacturing, and create jobs in sustainable sectors. The initiative also reflects growing foreign investor confidence in the country’s industrial potential.
Cambodia, like many Southeast Asian nations, faces challenges in managing plastic waste, with a large portion of discarded plastic ending up in landfills or informal disposal sites. The new PET recycling facility is anticipated to contribute significantly to reducing plastic pollution and developing recycling infrastructure within the country. Policymakers have emphasized that such investments can support long-term environmental protection while promoting economic growth through green industrial development.
As construction progresses, the facility is expected to play a key role in Cambodia’s waste recovery landscape, providing an industrial solution for converting plastic waste into usable manufacturing materials. The plant represents a practical step toward sustainable production and responsible waste management, while also strengthening the country’s position in regional environmental and industrial initiatives.
