Phnom Penh: Cambodia is projected to experience a substantial increase in tourist arrivals from China in 2026, driven by the government’s planned implementation of a visa-free pilot scheme for Chinese nationals. The initiative, set to take effect from mid-June to October 15, 2026, is part of broader efforts to strengthen the nation’s tourism sector and enhance regional travel connectivity.
According to government officials, Cambodia welcomed approximately 5.57 million international tourists in 2025, with more than 1.2 million visitors coming from China — marking a year-on-year increase of over 40% in Chinese arrivals. China remains the second-largest source of foreign tourists to the Southeast Asian country, following Vietnam.
The pilot visa-free policy aims to simplify entry procedures for Chinese travellers, removing the need for visas during the specified period and potentially making Cambodia a more attractive and accessible destination. Tourism Minister Huot Hak highlighted that easing travel restrictions could support sustained tourism growth and deepen economic ties between Cambodia and China.
Expert analysis and tourism stakeholders suggest that the visa-free initiative may boost hotel occupancy, cultural site visits, and travel-related spending, particularly in major destinations such as Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, and Cambodia’s coastal provinces. Cambodia’s tourism infrastructure, known for its UNESCO world heritage sites — including the Angkor Archaeological Park — is expected to benefit from heightened international interest.
In addition to facilitating travel for leisure visitors, Cambodian officials indicated that the pilot programme could serve as a catalyst for broader economic engagement, encouraging investment and business travel from China. Tourism continues to be a key pillar of the Cambodian economy, contributing to employment and revenue across hospitality, transport, and service sectors.
As the visa-free pilot period approaches, industry observers will closely monitor arrival figures, local tourism performance, and associated economic impacts to assess the initiative’s effectiveness and long-term potential.
