Phnom Penh, Cambodia — The Royal Government of Cambodia has officially launched a poverty support program aimed at assisting low-income households across targeted districts, marking a significant step in ongoing efforts to address socioeconomic challenges in the country.
Under the new initiative, each eligible poor family will receive a one-time cash grant of approximately 1.8 million riels (around $450 USD) to help alleviate financial hardship and improve living conditions. The rollout begins in several selected districts, including Toek Phos in Kampong Chhnang and Preah Vihear provinces, with further expansion planned in the coming months.
The programme, launched by the Ministry of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation in collaboration with provincial authorities, aims to provide immediate financial relief to vulnerable groups, including households affected by rising living costs and limited income opportunities. Officials emphasise that the cash support will help families cover essential needs such as food, healthcare, education, and basic household expenses.
This latest social protection measure complements broader national strategies to reduce poverty and strengthen social safety nets, aligning with Cambodia’s long-term development goals to improve economic equity and social welfare. According to government figures, assistance for poor and vulnerable populations has been a key priority, with substantial budget allocations dedicated to social support programmes in recent years.
The initiative also reflects Cambodia’s efforts to maintain progress in poverty reduction amid fluctuating economic conditions, including post-pandemic recovery and global price pressures. By targeting households most in need, authorities aim to mitigate the impact of economic volatility and enhance resilience among marginalised communities.
