Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres in Geneva to seek international support for resolving a longstanding territorial dispute with neighbouring Thailand. The discussions focused on finding a peaceful and diplomatic solution to the border row while reinforcing Cambodia’s commitment to regional stability and international law.
During the meeting, Hun Manet highlighted the need for constructive engagement from the global community to help de-escalate tensions and encourage dialogue between the two countries. He stressed Cambodia’s willingness to cooperate through diplomatic channels and multilateral institutions to prevent further conflict and protect civilian populations affected by the border dispute.
The territorial row between Cambodia and Thailand stems from contested areas along their shared border, with sporadic clashes reported in recent months that have displaced civilians and strained bilateral relations. Previous attempts at negotiation, including ASEAN-led efforts and ceasefire agreements, have sought to stabilise the situation, but tensions have periodically resurfaced.
In his appeal to the UN, Hun Manet urged stronger mediation and cooperation from international partners, highlighting that diplomatic solutions are essential for long-term peace and sustainable regional cooperation. He reiterated Cambodia’s respect for international law and emphasised the role that the United Nations can play in facilitating constructive dialogue.
The meeting also served as a platform to showcase Cambodia’s broader engagement with global governance institutions and its commitment to peaceful conflict resolution. Officials present underscored that diplomatic avenues and legal mechanisms remain the preferred means of addressing sensitive territorial issues without resorting to armed confrontation.
As regional actors and multilateral organisations continue their efforts to support peace initiatives, Cambodia’s outreach to the UN reflects a strategic approach to international dispute resolution. The outcome of ongoing diplomatic discussions will be closely watched by neighbouring states and international stakeholders invested in upholding peace and stability in Southeast Asia.
