SEOUL — Cambodia’s Ambassador to South Korea, Khuon Phon Rattanak, has officially assured executives of South Korean conglomerate KBI Group that the Cambodian embassy stands ready to facilitate strategic meetings with both public and private sector institutions to smooth the way for direct investments into the Kingdom.
The diplomatic assurance came during a high-level meeting between Ambassador Phon Rattanak and Park Hyo Sang, CEO of KBI Group, held at the Cambodian Embassy in Seoul on June 10, 2026.
KBI Group Eyeing Expansion in Cambodia’s Growing Market
During the bilateral talks, Park expressed KBI Group’s strong interest in exploring direct investment opportunities in Cambodia, pointing to the Southeast Asian nation’s enduring political stability and robust economic trajectory as key drivers for their interest.
“We are confident in Cambodia’s future growth prospects, and we would also like to contribute to the country’s economic development,” Park stated during the meeting. “We would appreciate recommendations on sectors where KBI Group should begin investing.”
Founded in 1951, KBI Group is a major player in South Korea’s industrial landscape. The conglomerate operates more than 30 subsidiaries across 11 countries, spanning six core business sectors:
- Automotive parts manufacturing
- Industrial materials
- Construction and real estate
- Textiles and packaging
- Environment and energy
- Medical services
High-Demand Sectors Targeted for Strategic Partnership
In response to KBI Group’s inquiry, Ambassador Phon Rattanak highlighted specific industries that bridge the conglomerate’s multi-sector expertise with Cambodia’s urgent economic development needs.
Energy Sector Backing Industrial Growth
The Ambassador heavily emphasized Cambodia’s energy sector as a primary destination for immediate investment. Strengthening energy infrastructure remains critical for Cambodia to support its rapidly expanding industrial growth and meet rising domestic consumption demands.
Healthcare and Nursing Education
Another unique avenue raised during the talks was nursing education and training. Given the current surging demand for healthcare professionals in South Korea, collaboration in training Cambodian healthcare workers presents a mutually beneficial opportunity for both nations.
Ambassador Phon Rattanak extended an official invitation to the KBI Group leadership to visit Cambodia for an on-the-ground assessment. “The embassy is fully prepared to facilitate meetings between KBI Group and relevant public and private institutions in Cambodia,” he added.
Cambodia-South Korea Trade Volumes Surge by over 30%
The investment push comes at a time of accelerating commercial ties between the two nations. South Korea currently ranks as Cambodia’s 11th-largest trading partner.
According to the latest data from the General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE), bilateral trade between Cambodia and South Korea reached $476.88 million during the first five months of 2026. This marks a sharp 31.5% increase compared to the same period in 2025.
Key Trade Metrics (Jan–May 2026):
- Cambodian Exports to South Korea: $170.1 million (Up 36.7% year-on-year)
- Cambodian Imports from South Korea: $306.77 million (Up 28.8% year-on-year)
- Trade Deficit: Cambodia recorded a trade deficit of approximately $136.67 million for this period, up from the $113.78 million deficit logged during the first five months of 2025.
The rapid growth in trade volume underscores the timely nature of KBI Group’s investment interest, as Cambodia continues to solidify its position as an attractive hub for foreign direct investment (FDI) in the region.
