PHNOM PENH — The Cambodia Chamber of Commerce (CCC) and a delegation of Japanese business representatives held high-level discussions in Phnom Penh on Tuesday. The strategic meeting aimed to expand economic and commercial cooperation between the two nations, with a strong focus on healthcare, agriculture, services, and workforce development.
The bilateral session was chaired by Tan Monivann, Vice President of the CCC, representing Kith Meng, President of the CCC and Chair of the ASEAN Business Advisory Council for Cambodia. The visiting Japanese delegation was led by Ros Rasy, Head of the CCC Representative Office in Sendai, Japan.
Japanese Entrepreneurs Seek First-Hand Business Insights
During the meeting, Rasy expressed gratitude to the Cambodian business chamber for facilitating the engagement. He noted that the mission brought a diverse group of Japanese entrepreneurs directly to Cambodia to gain first-hand insights into the Kingdom’s business environment and observe its rapid economic and urban development.
The visiting business delegation represented multiple commercial sectors, including:
- Healthcare & Cosmetics: Exploring avenues to meet rising domestic consumer demand.
- Hospitality & Services: Focusing on restaurants and specialized elderly care services.
- Agriculture & Trading: Seeking detailed information on expanding raw material and crop investments.
In response, Monivann praised the active role played by the CCC’s representative office in Sendai for continuously promoting bilateral business relations. He highlighted the long-standing partnership between Cambodia and Japan, emphasizing Tokyo’s continued contribution through infrastructure support, legal cooperation, and institutional development.
Promising Sectors for Future Japanese Investment
Monivann explained that Cambodia has already attracted a significant number of Japanese companies, yet several industries still possess immense growth potential. Specifically, he identified healthcare as a promising sector driven by rising domestic demand, alongside traditional import-export activities.
Furthermore, he highlighted Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a vital sector that actively supports labor mobility and skills development, paving the way for employment opportunities in Japan. Monivann encouraged the delegation to utilize Cambodia’s competitive labor costs and favorable investment incentives offered by the Royal Government.
Cambodia-Japan Bilateral Trade Surges past $1.2 Billion
This high-level business match comes amidst a period of robust economic growth between the two countries. According to the General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE), Cambodia-Japan bilateral trade exceeded $1.2 billion in the first five months of 2026. This represents a strong 17.2 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
A closer look at the trade metrics reveals an upward trajectory for both import and export markets:
- Cambodian Exports to Japan: Reached $766 million between January and May, marking a 20.6 percent increase year-on-year.
- Cambodian Imports from Japan: Totaled $434 million during the same period, reflecting an 11.8 percent increase.
The ongoing dialogue and increasing trade volumes underscore a mutual commitment to deeper integration, positioning Cambodia as a highly competitive manufacturing and service hub for Japanese enterprises in Southeast Asia.
