PHNOM PENH — Cambodia’s Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training (MLVT) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have joined forces to accelerate workforce development in the country’s emerging electric vehicle (EV) and advanced agro-processing sectors.
The initiative was highlighted during a joint consultative workshop in Phnom Penh focused on preparing Cambodia’s labor force for a green economic transition. The event brought together key policymakers, development partners, and industry representatives, including Minister of Labour H.E. Heng Sour and ADB Country Director Yasmin Siddiqi.
Strategic Focus Areas
The partnership emphasizes aligning technical and vocational education and training (TVET) with modern industrial demands to accelerate economic diversification:
- Electric Vehicle (EV) Sector: Updating technical curriculum to train specialized technicians for EV assembly, servicing, battery management, and maintenance as the nation transitions toward clean transportation.
- Advanced Agro-Processing: Modernizing processing capabilities for key agricultural products—such as cashews and rice—to transition from raw commodity exports to high-value processed goods.
- Technical Training Upgrades: Enhancing vocational schools and training master trainers through international partnerships to bridge the skill gap between education and employment.
Aligning Workforce with Long-Term Economic Goals
Minister Heng Sour noted that updating Cambodia’s industrial base and technical training frameworks is essential for meeting the nation’s long-term economic objectives toward 2050. ADB Country Director Yasmin Siddiqi reaffirmed ADB’s commitment to backing sustainable workforce initiatives, stressing that building an agile, skilled talent pool is a key prerequisite for attracting foreign direct investment in green and high-tech industries.
