Phnom Penh, December 15 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, accompanied by a high-level delegation, has left Phnom Penh to attend the ASEAN-Japan Commemorative Summit. This significant event marks the 50th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation. The invitation to the Summit was extended by the Prime Minister of Japan, Kishida Fumio. The Summit will take place in Tokyo from December 16 to 18.

The purpose of the ASEAN-Japan Commemorative Summit is to strengthen the partnership between ASEAN and Japan and work towards promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the region. The Summit will witness the launch of a new Joint Vision Statement on ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation, which aims to build a strong foundation for collaborative efforts. The Implementation Plan of the Joint Vision Statement will focus on three key themes: heart-to-heart partners across generations, partners for co-creation of the economy and society of the future, and partners for peace and stability, as stated in a press release shared by Fresh News on December 15.

During the Summit, Prime Minister Hun Manet will also hold a bilateral summit meeting with his Japanese counterpart, Kishida Fumio. The objective of this meeting will be to further strengthen and deepen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Cambodia and Japan. Discussions will focus not only on enhancing cooperation but also on identifying areas that can bring tangible benefits to both nations. Regional and international issues of common interest and concern will also be on the agenda. Furthermore, the two Prime Ministers will witness the signing of important cooperation agreements, including exchanges of notes on Japanese grant aid for three projects related to hydrography, water supply, and e-government. Other cooperative documents in the fields of digital technology, banking, and energy will also be signed.

In addition to the Summit, Prime Minister Hun Manet will participate in the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) Leaders Meeting. This gathering will provide a platform for discussions on energy transition policies and cooperation towards decarbonization in Asia. It demonstrates Cambodia’s commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly development.

As part of his visit to Tokyo, Prime Minister Hun Manet will have a working breakfast with other regional leaders, including Sonexay Siphandone, Prime Minister of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, and Pham Minh Chinh, Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. This will provide an opportunity to exchange ideas, foster closer regional ties, and explore avenues for collaboration.

Additionally, Prime Minister Hun Manet will engage with the Cambodian community in Japan. This interaction aims to strengthen the bond between the diaspora and their home country, promote cultural exchange, and address any concerns or challenges they may face.

The participation of Prime Minister Hun Manet in the ASEAN-Japan Commemorative Summit underscores Cambodia’s commitment to fostering regional cooperation and advancing its strategic relationships. It highlights the country’s dedication to promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the region while seeking tangible benefits for both Cambodia and Japan.

The ASEAN-Japan Commemorative Summit provides a platform to deepen ties, advance mutual goals, and lay a solid foundation for future collaborations. Through this Summit, ASEAN and Japan aim to create a stronger partnership that will contribute to the well-being of the people and the growth of the region as a whole.
