Cambodian Prime Minister Announces Comprehensive Plans to Bolster Northeast Investments and Tourism

by TBC

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has initiated a series of measures aimed at fostering economic growth and national development, emphasizing particular attention to the country’s northeast region and tourism sector. On the occasion of the 1st Anniversary of the Royal Government of the 7th Legislature of the National Assembly of Cambodia, Manet outlined his vision.

Manet has directed Deputy Prime Minister Aun Pornmoniroth to formulate an incentive program designed to spur investment in the northeast, specifically targeting local investors. The Prime Minister has stressed the urgency of this package and expects its completion by the end of 2024 for implementation in early 2025. This strategic move aims to address public concerns regarding land issues in the Development Triangle Area (DTA).

In addition to the economic measures, the Royal Government has announced plans to propel tourism by allowing free weekend tours to Kratie, Stung Treng, Mondulkiri, and Ratanakkiri provinces from September to December 2024. These tours are intended to give people, especially the youth, an opportunity to get acquainted with the infrastructural developments and the reality of the border roads firsthand.

Prime Minister Manet has also extended his focus on Siem Reap, a key tourist hub. Acknowledging the struggles of the tourism industry, he has extended tax exemptions for tourism businesses in Siem Reap until the end of June 2025. In addition to the tax reprieve, tourism businesses audits will be postponed, and a USD 50 million allowance via SME banks for special loans will support the robust revival of the region’s tourism.

Furthermore, Manet has indicated a methodical approach to enhance visitor experience at the revered Angkor Archaeological Park. He advised streamlining visitation procedures and simplifying the process for photography in the park, to better showcase the country’s cultural heritage and improve tourist convenience.

Recognizing the import of agriculture, Manet has approved the deployment of 1,000 agricultural technical officers to provide better support and training to farmers, with a priority given to the northeast provinces. This initiative comes as a part of a broader effort to modernize Cambodian agriculture across select provinces.

Tourists will also benefit from the revised opening and closing hours at the temples, particularly Angkor Wat, to enrich their experience of the historical sites. Prime Minister Manet underscored the importance of these adjustments to accommodate for seasonal changes and the safety of both the temples and visitors.

Lastly, Prime Minister Manet reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to protect national sovereignty by establishing a Border Infrastructure Fund. This initiative aims to enhance border roads and encourage citizens’ participation in national defense.

These new policies and initiatives unveiled by Prime Minister Hun Manet signal the Government’s dedication to improve living standards, propel the national economy towards prosperity, and secure Cambodia’s territorial integrity.
