PHNOM PENH — Cambodia and Vietnam have reaffirmed their mutual commitment to expand two-way commercial exchanges, officially setting an ambitious target to scale annual bilateral trade volume to $20 billion in the coming years. The economic objective underscores a concerted drive by both neighboring governments to deepen cross-border supply chain integration, streamline customs protocols, and facilitate greater direct investment across key industrial sectors.
Senior leadership and trade delegations from both nations highlighted that achieving the commercial target requires sustained institutional coordination, particularly in modernizing border gate infrastructure and establishing specialized border economic zones. The renewed bilateral focus builds on robust trade momentum, which has seen two-way merchandise flows expand consistently across agricultural commodities, light manufacturing inputs, construction materials, and consumer goods.
Strategic Initiatives Driving Cambodia Vietnam Bilateral Trade
To support long-term commercial goals, authorities are focusing on resolving remaining non-tariff barriers, expediting quarantine and inspection procedures, and harmonizing digital customs clearance mechanisms. Enhancing cross-border transport infrastructure remains a foundational pillar of this cooperation, with ongoing joint efforts directed toward connecting highway corridors, expanding inland container depots, and optimizing maritime shipping routes along shared riverine and coastal networks.
The bilateral roadmap also places strong emphasis on private sector investment. Cambodian economic authorities are encouraging Vietnamese enterprises to expand their capital footprint in processing agricultural produce, renewable energy generation, high-tech manufacturing, and logistics warehousing. Concurrently, both nations are leveraging multilateral mechanisms under the ASEAN Economic Community and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) to shield domestic supply chains against broader global trade volatility.
Bilateral trade expansion will be supported by regular meetings of the Joint Commission on Economic, Cultural, Scientific and Technological Cooperation, ensuring that policy frameworks adapt quickly to the requirements of business communities on both sides of the border.
