KAMPONG CHHNANG — Prime Minister Hun Manet has officially inaugurated the newly completed TH Automotive Manufacturing Co., Ltd. assembly plant in Kampong Chhnang province, presiding over the commercial rollout of its assembly line for GAC passenger vehicles. The launch represents a $20 million fixed-asset investment by the local firm, designed to assemble completely disassembled vehicle kits into finished units for the domestic automotive market.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Prime Minister stated that local vehicle assembly operations generate vital opportunities for industrial diversification, skilled employment, and technology transfer. The development highlights Cambodia’s strategic transition away from a reliance on fully built-up vehicle imports toward domestic assembly ecosystems integrated into regional industrial supply networks.
Expanding Domestic Assembly at Kampong Chhnang Automotive Factory
The operational launch of the Kampong Chhnang automotive factory adds to Cambodia’s expanding automotive manufacturing sector, which now encompasses 15 assembly and manufacturing projects nationwide. According to official government data, 10 of these facilities are operational, two are approaching commercial production, and three remain under development, together delivering a cumulative production capacity of approximately 35,000 vehicles per year. Total investment across the sector has reached nearly $248 million, comprising 28 percent domestic capital and 72 percent foreign direct investment, supporting 2,774 skilled jobs.
Beyond its current assembly of GAC vehicles, TH Automotive Manufacturing plans to introduce assembly lines for American automotive brand Chevrolet at the facility in the near future. The plant currently employs roughly 250 trained technical workers, adhering to strict manufacturing protocols to produce passenger vehicles tailored for Cambodian road conditions.
The establishment of the facility joins recent investments by global automakers including Toyota Tsusho, Ford, Hyundai, and BYD, which have established Knocked-Down assembly operations across the Kingdom. Government authorities reaffirmed their commitment to refining industrial policies and targeted incentives to support existing assembly operations, encourage local component supply chains, and position Cambodia as a competitive manufacturing corridor across Southeast Asia.
