In a recent interaction with members of the European Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia (EuroCham), Minister of Labour and Vocational Training Heng Sour outlined potential amendments to work conditions for various sectors. At the annual Human Resources Forum, which took place at the Oakwood Hotel in Phnom Penh, Sour engaged in discussions regarding the well-being of employees across the nation.

During the meeting, Sour indicated the Ministry’s intent to evaluate and enhance labor conditions for professional and general workers within ten service categories. As part of the newly initiated seventh mandate, such improvements are set to contribute to a superior business climate in Cambodia.

In line with the initiatives recommended by Prime Minister Hun Manet, Sour mentioned that revisions pertaining to work schedules and compensation are forthcoming. The Minister referenced decisions made during the 19th assembly of the Royal Government-Private Sector that occurred on November 13, 2023.

The Minister’s announcement included information that the ministry is ready to unveil a service adjustment in the immediate future, with specific details to be made public within the week.

Sour took the opportunity to encourage EuroCham members to consider the resources offered by the Ministry’s education facilities for staff training and development. The training programs span from Vocational Technical Level 1 to Advanced Technical Degree (Diploma) and are provided at no cost.

Highlighting the Ministry’s commitment to skill enhancement, Sour shared that around 1.5 million youth from economically disadvantaged and vulnerable backgrounds have already benefited from vocational training programs. Each trainee is supported with a monthly allowance of 280,000 Riels.

The strategy to elevate human capital and advance the labor force is a central component of the seventh mandate, as expressed by the Ministry. The Minister emphasized the significance of such training in today’s fast-paced economy, which is increasingly influenced by digital technology. Training initiatives like these are designed to equip each citizen with a vital life skill to better navigate the workforce and the digital arena.
