Cambodia has made significant strides in leading the clean energy revolution in Southeast Asia. With the introduction of the Power Development Masterplan (PDP) and the National Energy Efficiency Policy (NEEP), the country is committed to a greener, more sustainable future.
Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen emphasized the importance of adopting best practices in energy efficiency and renewable energy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create new jobs. The Royal Government’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030 demonstrates their dedication to creating a better future for Cambodians and the world.
Under the National Energy Efficiency Policy, the Cambodian government aims to reduce energy consumption by 19% compared to business-as-usual levels by 2030. This policy provides strategic directions, priority areas, and sectoral targets to help harness the full potential of energy efficiency. Minister of Mines and Energy, Suy Sem, stressed the importance of developing a robust policy framework, building stakeholder capacity, raising awareness, and supporting private sector investments.
Cambodia’s focus on renewable energy sources has led to a promising collaboration with Singapore. In a deal still under negotiation, Singapore plans to import 1 GW of renewable energy annually from Cambodia. This partnership would make up a quarter of Singapore’s low-carbon electricity imports by 2035, positioning Cambodia as a major clean energy exporter in the region.
Minister of Environment Say Sam Al highlighted the benefits of prioritizing renewable energy sources, which include competitive economic advantages, mitigating the impact of climate change, and promoting sustainable development. Cambodia’s commitment to energy efficiency and clean technology creates new economic opportunities and improves citizens’ well-being.
The Power Development Masterplan and the National Energy Efficiency Policy will play a crucial role in maintaining stable and affordable power prices, enabling Cambodia to reach its development goals and become a key player in energy efficiency and renewable energy in the region.
Cambodia’s dedication to sustainable energy and energy efficiency not only benefits the country economically and socially but also establishes a competitive advantage in the regional marketplace. With its ambitious goals and diligent investment in sustainable technologies, Cambodia’s positive impact on the world will be felt for generations to come.
