In an age marked by expanding international relationships, the announcement of the 2024 China-Cambodia People-to-People Exchange Year stands as a significant initiative aimed at fostering closer ties between the peoples of China and Cambodia. This detailed strategy underscores both nations’ commitment to constructing a shared future through cultural, educational, and tourism exchanges.
Wang Wenbin, the Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia, highlighted the mission’s significance during an interview with Fresh News, coinciding with the “Tea for Harmony Yaji Cultural Salon” event at the Royal University of Fine Arts on August 7, 2024. Ambassador Wang outlined that the 2024 designation of the “China-Cambodia Cultural Exchange Year” emerged from a shared vision for deepening bilateral ties and promoting the collaborative construction of a community with a shared future.
The year’s events kicked off impressively with a Cambodian national art group’s performance at the Angkor archaeological site, setting a high bar for a year filled with vibrant cultural interactions. Events such as “Shaolin Meets Angkor” have captured public imagination, while the surge in tourism, with a 45% increase in Chinese tourists to Cambodia, demonstrates the growing interest and connections between the two countries. Furthermore, health initiatives like the “Project to Eliminate Cataract Blindness” in Prey Veng Province, which restored sight to nearly 3,900 Cambodians, illustrate the tangible benefits of this collaboration.
Looking forward, Ambassador Wang emphasized the continuation of cultural exchanges and the introduction of a youth dialogue to bridge understanding between the younger generations of China and Cambodia. The planned “China-Cambodia Friendship City Conference” aims to solidify local cooperation, and efforts to resume operations at the Phnom Penh Chinese Cultural Center will allow Cambodians firsthand experiences of Chinese culture. The comprehensive approach also includes expanding cooperation in education, cultural heritage protection, and healthcare, all of which contribute to the flourishing friendship and mutual well-being of the two nations’ peoples.
Ambassador Wang expressed optimism that the Year of Cultural Exchanges would further solidify the profound friendship between China and Cambodia, setting a strong foundation for their continued partnership and shared endeavors.
Launched in January in Siem Reap province, the 2024 Cambodia-China People-to-People Exchange Year follows a long tradition of friendship and cooperation. As China and Cambodia enter a new phase of enhanced bilateral relations, these cultural exchanges serve as pivotal bridges, strengthening the bonds between the two countries and opening up new avenues for cooperation and understanding in a rapidly evolving world.
