Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), has commended Cambodia for its robust macroeconomic performance and efforts to diversify its economy.
The praise came during her meeting with H.E. Mrs. Cham Nimul, Cambodia’s Minister of Commerce, on March 27, held on the sidelines of Cambodia’s Third Trade Policy Review in Geneva, Switzerland.
During their discussion, the two leaders exchanged views on the significance of the multilateral trading system in driving the socio-economic development of least-developed countries. They also emphasized the role of the Trade Policy Review mechanism in promoting transparency within the WTO framework.
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala expressed appreciation for Cambodia’s active engagement in all areas of the WTO’s work. She particularly highlighted Cambodia’s leadership within the LDC Group and its fulfillment of key commitments, including the full implementation of the Trade Facilitation Agreement and the ratification of the Fisheries Subsidies Agreement.
Minister Cham Nimul welcomed the Director-General’s remarks and reaffirmed Cambodia’s support for an open, rules-based multilateral trading system, which she said has brought significant benefits to the country.
She further emphasized the importance of the Trade Policy Review process as a valuable tool for both sharing Cambodia’s trade policies with other Members and reflecting on their implementation. The Minister also expressed satisfaction with the constructive engagement and keen interest shown by WTO Members in Cambodia’s trade practices.
