On Tuesday, May 7, Cambodian Senate President, Samdech Techo Hun Sen, held a virtual meeting with Myanmar’s Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, who serves as the Chairman of the State Administration Council. The digital conference provided a platform for these leaders to reconnect and discuss matters of mutual interest and concern.
During the meeting, Samdech Techo expressed his pleasure at having the opportunity to interact with Min Aung Hlaing once more and extended his gratitude for the congratulatory message he received upon his election as President of the Senate. The conversation’s principal aim was to share updates on the political and social developments occurring within Myanmar and to deliberate on the prospects for future reciprocal visits.
An important point brought up by Samdech Techo was the suggestion for Min Aung Hlaing to facilitate a digital dialogue with Aung San Suu Kyi, noting their longstanding collaboration within ASEAN contexts. Moreover, Samdech Techo emphasized the critical nature of adhering to the Five-Point Consensus, asserting that advancements on this front would significantly aid Myanmar’s peace efforts and reinforce its leadership position.
Samdech Techo also praised the decision by the State Administration Council to participate in the Foreign Ministerial Meeting in January with non-political representatives and urged the continuation of this practice in pivotal ASEAN discussions.
In response, Min Aung Hlaing conveyed his appreciation for the congratulatory wishes he received from Samdech Techo and recognized the latter’s significant contributions, especially during his tenure as ASEAN Chairman, towards addressing Myanmar’s intricate situation. He reaffirmed his dedication to nominating non-political delegates to ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings and declared his intention to carefully consider further suggestions. Min Aung Hlaing also mentioned his plans to dispatch a special envoy to Cambodia soon to delve deeper into these discussions and shared his eagerness to draw from Cambodia’s National Election Committee on organizing elections that are free, transparent, and just.
The conference wasn’t limited to political discourse, as both leaders took the time to also exchange views on enhancing cultural and sports cooperations, underscoring the multifaceted nature of the dialogue and the potential for strengthening ties through various means.
