Cambodia’s Beaches Gain Global Recognition as Top Travel Destinations

by TBC

Cambodia’s pristine coastal regions are making waves internationally, drawing attention from global travelers seeking unspoiled white-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and fresh seafood. UK-based media outlet The Independent has spotlighted the Kingdom’s top seven beaches, showcasing its potential as a premier travel destination beyond the iconic temples of Siem Reap.

While Cambodia is renowned for its cultural landmarks, including Angkor Wat – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the largest religious monuments in the world – The Independent has highlighted the nation’s stunning coastline and islands as must-visit locations.

Spotlight on Cambodia’s Top Beaches

The publication praised Cambodia’s 275 miles of coastline along the Gulf of Thailand, describing it as “well worth exploring.” Ranking the country’s top seven beaches, The Independent emphasized their serene beauty and unique appeal.

1. Long Beach (Sok San Beach), Koh Rong Island
Topping the list is Long Beach, a seven-kilometer stretch of powdery white sand and aquamarine waters. This beach offers a range of accommodations, from backpacker lodgings to luxury resorts like The Royal Sands Koh Rong. At night, visitors can witness bioluminescent plankton illuminating the shoreline. Notably, Long Beach was featured in season 32 of the international TV show Survivor.

2. Lonely Beach, Koh Rong Island
A secluded haven on Koh Rong’s northern edge, Lonely Beach is ideal for relaxation and solitude. Its golden sands and swaying palm trees provide the perfect backdrop for sunsets and locally sourced seafood feasts.

3. Koh Tonsay (Rabbit Island), Kep
Just a short ferry ride from Kep, Rabbit Island offers a tranquil escape with peaceful beaches and a laid-back atmosphere.

4. Long Set Beach, Koh Rong
Known for its turquoise waters and lush surroundings, Long Set Beach is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and kayaking. Beachfront restaurants and accommodations add to its charm.

5. Lazy Beach, Koh Rong Sanloem
Accessible via a short jungle trek, Lazy Beach is celebrated for its golden sands, vibrant coral reefs, and eco-friendly accommodations that blend seamlessly with nature.

6. Saracen Bay, Koh Rong Sanloem
Saracen Bay’s crescent-shaped coastline and calm waters make it a family-friendly destination, offering activities like kayaking and paddleboarding.

7. Otres Beach, Sihanoukville
Known for its relaxed vibe, Otres Beach features boutique hotels, beach bars, and opportunities for paddleboarding or island exploration.

Diversifying Tourist Attractions

Steve Jolly, owner of Kampot-based resort Karma Traders, noted that international tourists in 2024 are increasingly seeking diverse experiences. While Angkor Wat remains Cambodia’s primary attraction, the country’s coastal regions offer a refreshing alternative with their relaxed atmosphere and outdoor activities.

Jolly highlighted Koh Rong and Koh Rong Sanloem as key destinations for beach retreats and world-class scuba diving. He also encouraged visitors to explore lesser-known areas such as:

  • Mondulkiri: Famous for elephant sanctuaries, waterfalls, and coffee plantations.
  • Kratie: Known for the endangered Irrawaddy dolphins.
  • Koh Kong Province: Ideal for trekking and nature hikes in the Cardamom Mountains.

Growing Appeal of Small Towns

Jolly also pointed to smaller towns like Kampot, Kep, and Battambang, which are gaining popularity for their unique attractions. These include Kampot’s pepper farms, Kep’s seafood, and Battambang’s cultural landmarks.

With its blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and diverse attractions, Cambodia’s coastal and inland destinations are cementing their place on the global tourism map.
