The Royal Government of Cambodia has recently approved five renewable energy investment projects, with a combined capacity of 520 megawatts. These projects will play a significant role in increasing the power supply to the national grid, reducing carbon emissions, and protecting the environment.

The decision to invest in renewable energy is a significant step for Cambodia, as the country has been heavily dependent on fossil fuels for energy production. The shift towards renewable energy is in line with the government’s goal to reduce carbon emissions and achieve sustainable development.

The projects were approved during a cabinet plenary session chaired by Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen. According to Phay Siphan, Minister Attached to the Prime Minister and Head of the Royal Government Spokesperson Unit, the projects include a combination of hydropower and solar power stations.

One of the projects is a combination of the 70-megawatt Stung Russey Chrum Kandal hydropower project and the 100-megawatt Stung Veay Thmar Kambot hydropower project in Koh Kong province. The remaining four projects are solar power stations with a capacity of 150 megawatts in Pursat province, 60 megawatts in Kampong Chhnang province, 60 megawatts in Svay Rieng province, and 80 megawatts in Prey Veng province.

The renewable energy projects will provide a stable power supply to the national grid, reducing the risk of blackouts and brownouts. The projects will also help address the energy shortages faced by the country and reduce the reliance on expensive imported fuel.

Moreover, the projects will significantly contribute to reducing carbon emissions and help protect the environment. The use of renewable energy sources will reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions, which are a significant contributor to global warming and climate change.

Apart from the benefits mentioned above, the renewable energy projects will also have a positive impact on the economy. The government will receive a total tax revenue of approximately $322.88 million during the operation of the five projects, excluding other tax revenues. This revenue can be used to fund other essential projects and promote economic growth.

The renewable energy projects will also create job opportunities for the local population. The construction of the projects will require a significant workforce, and once operational, they will require a workforce to operate and maintain the facilities.

The approval of the five renewable energy investment projects is a significant step towards sustainable development in Cambodia. The projects will provide a stable power supply, reduce carbon emissions, and create job opportunities. Additionally, the tax revenue generated from the projects will contribute to the country’s economic growth.
