Cambodia's Rice Exports Generate Over $930 Million in Early 2025, Driven by Strong Paddy and Fragrant Rice Demand
SHARE

Cambodia’s rice sector has recorded impressive export performance in the first four months of 2025, generating USD 932.27 million in national revenue, according to data from the Cambodia Rice Federation (CRF). This marks a year-on-year increase of nearly 10%, reflecting growing international demand for both Cambodian paddy and milled rice.

Paddy and Milled Rice Drive Export Growth

Between January and April 2025, paddy rice exports generated over USD 723 million, while milled rice contributed close to USD 210 million. In comparison, total rice-related earnings during the same period in 2024 amounted to USD 863.61 million, making this year’s growth a 7.95% improvement.

Cambodia exported 3,031,431 tonnes of paddy rice, a substantial 25.3% increase over the same period last year. Most of this was exported to neighbouring countries such as Vietnam and Thailand, where advanced milling infrastructure and capital circulation support large-scale processing and re-export activities.

Milled Rice Exports Expand to 59 Global Destinations

From January to April 2025, Cambodia exported 282,315 tonnes of milled rice, marking a 13.61% rise from 248,491 tonnes in the same period of 2024. A total of 48 Cambodian rice exporters shipped rice to 59 countries, reinforcing Cambodia’s position as a competitive rice supplier on the global stage.

Top Export Destinations for Cambodian Milled Rice:

  • Europe: 134,212 tonnes (47.5% of total exports)
  • China: 70,435 tonnes
  • ASEAN countries: 40,291 tonnes
  • Other markets (Africa, Middle East, etc.): Remaining volume

Fragrant Rice Remains Cambodia’s Leading Export

According to the CRF, fragrant rice dominated Cambodia’s milled rice exports, accounting for 77.94% of the total volume. Other rice types exported included:

  • White rice: 17.15%
  • Parboiled rice: 2.47%
  • Organic rice: 1.95%
  • Other varieties: 0.49%

The high share of fragrant rice highlights Cambodia’s premium position in the high-quality rice export market, especially in Europe and China.

Government Support to Boost Domestic Processing Capacity

CRF Secretary-General Lun Yeng noted that the performance of rice exports in Q1 2025 exceeded that of the previous year. He highlighted the Royal Government of Cambodia’s ongoing efforts to support the rice sector, including plans to increase funding for modernising rice mills across the country.

By improving milling capacity, Cambodia aims to process a larger share of paddy domestically, add more value to exports, and reduce its dependence on foreign facilities.

Outlook for Cambodia’s Rice Industry in 2025

With strong demand from Europe, China, and ASEAN countries, and growing investment in local infrastructure, Cambodia’s rice industry is well-positioned for sustained growth. Enhanced processing capabilities, better logistics, and continued government support are expected to strengthen Cambodia’s competitiveness in the global rice market throughout the rest of 2025.
