Phnom Penh, Cambodia – Akira Dodate, Chief Executive Officer of Japan Tourism Corporation, has expressed strong interest in investing in Cambodia’s agricultural sector, with a particular focus on smart agriculture and technology-driven farming systems. During his recent visit to Phnom Penh, Dodate led a Japanese delegation to explore opportunities for bilateral collaboration and potential investments in agri-technology and agro-industrial development.

Facilitated by Hay Vanna, a former opposition youth member now residing in Japan, the delegation was granted a courtesy meeting with Samdech Techo Hun Sen, President of the Senate, on May 14. The meeting signaled a new chapter of cooperation between Japan and Cambodia in agricultural innovation.

Strengthening Cambodia–Japan Agricultural Cooperation

Samdech Techo Hun Sen welcomed the delegation and expressed his appreciation for their interest in contributing to Cambodia’s agricultural growth. He highlighted that Japan’s advanced agricultural technologies could play a pivotal role in supporting Cambodia’s long-term food security and rural development strategies.

Akira Dodate shared insights into Japan’s smart agriculture systems—an approach that leverages data, automation, and advanced farming techniques to boost efficiency and sustainability. He expressed hope that his company could support Cambodia through technology transfer, human resource development, and long-term agricultural partnerships.

Dodate also proposed the idea of exchange programmes, where Cambodian agricultural officials and specialists could visit Japan to observe best practices in modern farming and agri-processing, potentially adapting them to local conditions in Cambodia.

Focus on Agro-Industry and Value Addition

During the meeting, Samdech Techo Hun Sen provided an overview of Cambodia’s agricultural transformation from 1979 to the present. Once a food-deficient nation, Cambodia now produces surplus crops and exports a variety of agricultural products. However, the country still faces challenges in processing and value addition.

“Despite increased agricultural production, a majority of our output is exported in raw form,” Samdech Techo noted. “We are missing out on economic opportunities that value-added processing could bring to local communities and national revenue.”

He encouraged Japanese investors to explore Cambodia’s agro-industrial sector, particularly in rice and cashew nut processing—two key commodities that currently lack sufficient domestic processing infrastructure.

“The development of agro-processing facilities would significantly enhance Cambodia’s export capacity, create jobs, and strengthen the country’s rural economy,” he said.

Investment Opportunities and Institutional Collaboration

Samdech Techo further emphasized the importance of institutional collaboration, particularly with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries. He expressed optimism that Japanese investment and technical expertise could address existing gaps and accelerate the modernization of Cambodia’s agricultural sector.

In response, Akira Dodate conveyed his appreciation for the insights shared by Samdech Techo and pledged to continue exploring investment avenues. He also committed to encouraging other Japanese companies to consider Cambodia as an emerging destination for agricultural and agro-industrial investment.

“We are inspired by Cambodia’s progress and potential,” Dodate said. “Our delegation will conduct follow-up studies and coordinate closely with relevant government agencies to identify viable projects.”

Cambodia: A Growing Destination for Smart Agriculture Investment

With increasing global attention on food security and sustainable agriculture, Cambodia is positioning itself as a destination for agritech investment. The country’s young workforce, fertile land, and supportive government policies present an attractive environment for international collaboration.

Japan, known for its innovation in high-tech agriculture, has the potential to be a valuable partner in Cambodia’s efforts to enhance productivity, reduce post-harvest losses, and boost export competitiveness.

The visit of Akira Dodate and the Japan Tourism Corporation delegation marks a promising step towards deepening agricultural ties between Japan and Cambodia. By integrating smart agriculture practices and expanding agro-processing industries, both nations stand to benefit from mutual growth, knowledge exchange, and sustainable development in the agricultural sector.
