Phnom Penh — Japan has provided over $300,000 in financial assistance to support community development projects in Cambodia, including the rehabilitation of a water supply system and the construction of a primary school, officials announced Friday. The initiative aims to improve access to safe water and enhance education infrastructure in targeted provinces.
The funding was allocated under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) program, administered by the Japanese Embassy in Cambodia and designed to support small-scale community initiatives that address basic human needs. The assistance package comprises approximately $162,000 for water system rehabilitation and $145,000 for the construction of classrooms and related facilities at a local primary school.
At a recent handover ceremony in Phnom Penh, Japan’s Ambassador to Cambodia, H.E. Okamura Kazuhiko, highlighted the importance of improving local residents’ quality of life by providing sustainable access to clean water and safe educational environments. Cambodian officials expressed appreciation for the partnership and reaffirmed the positive impact of such support on rural communities.
The water supply rehabilitation project will focus on repairing and upgrading existing infrastructure in areas where limited access has hindered residents’ ability to secure reliable and safe water for daily use. The initiative is expected to benefit hundreds of households upon completion. Meanwhile, the school construction component will provide new classrooms, sanitation facilities, and essential learning spaces for students in the designated community.
Development partners and local authorities underscored the role of international cooperation in addressing basic human security needs. The GGP funding complements broader national efforts to expand access to essential services and improve living conditions in underserved areas. By supporting both water access and education, the program aligns with Cambodia’s medium-term development goals and international human security priorities.
Officials stated that both projects are expected to be completed within the coming year, with progress monitored by relevant government ministries and community stakeholders to ensure effective implementation.
