Phnom Penh, Cambodia – Cambodia’s government and industry stakeholders have unveiled a strategic plan aimed at reinforcing the position of the country’s protected Geographical Indication (GI) pepper in international markets, with a focus on expanding recognition, export value and production quality.
Officials from the Ministry of Commerce (MoC) joined representatives from the Kampot Pepper Promotion Association (KPPA) in Phnom Penh to present the roadmap, underscoring commitment to enhancing Cambodia’s signature spice as a premium export product. Kampot pepper, a GI-certified spice known for its unique aroma and quality, holds protected status in Cambodia and in several foreign markets.
The outlined strategy includes strengthening quality assurance systems, expanding market access and increasing promotional efforts to raise awareness of GI pepper’s distinct characteristics abroad. Cambodia’s GI certification has helped differentiate Kampot pepper from other global varieties, but officials say more coordinated efforts are needed to reach broader high-value markets.
Trade experts attending the briefing highlighted the importance of improving supply chain infrastructure, encouraging value-added processing and complying with international standards to boost competitiveness. By focusing on product traceability and quality control, the strategy aims to support producers and exporters in meeting buyer requirements across key regions including the European Union, North America and Asia.
The initiative also emphasises the role of smallholder farmers and local cooperatives in upholding production standards and benefiting from value enhancement efforts. Cambodia’s pepper sector, particularly Kampot pepper, is seen as a driver of rural development and export diversification, aligning with broader agricultural modernisation objectives.
Officials affirmed that consistent policy support, enhanced market linkages and international outreach are core to sustaining growth in demand for GI pepper products. The strategy is expected to reinforce Cambodia’s reputation as a producer of premium agricultural commodities and strengthen its foothold in competitive global spice markets.
