PHNOM PENH — Chea Vuthy, the Secretary General of the Cambodian Investment Board (CIB) of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), led a high-level delegation on Saturday. The team inspected the ongoing progress of the Koh Kong Zhejiang Special Economic Zone (SEZ). During the visit, the delegation reviewed critical infrastructure development and growing investment activities at the fast-expanding industrial site.
The SEZ developer, current investors, and representatives from relevant ministries welcomed Vuthy upon his arrival. These officials are stationed in the Srae Ambel district of Koh Kong province.
Rapid Infrastructure Development and Investor Confidence
Established in 2024, the Koh Kong Zhejiang SEZ has moved at a rapid pace. Developers have already completed approximately 45 percent of the total designated area. Furthermore, the zone’s infrastructure now includes a comprehensive network of roads, robust electricity networks, and water reservoirs. A modern water treatment plant and dedicated worker accommodation are also fully operational.
According to the Council for the Development of Cambodia, the continuous expansion of the zone strongly reflects deep investor confidence. This trust remains strong despite global economic uncertainties. Consequently, the project heavily supports the country’s socio-economic development.
A Growing Hub for Furniture Manufacturing and Employment
The special economic zone has successfully positioned itself as a major hub for furniture components and furniture manufacturing. So far, the zone has attracted 76 investment projects with a total valuation exceeding $567 million.
The operational breakdown of these projects includes:
- Under Construction: 41 investment projects.
- Active or Preparing for Operations: 35 investment projects.
This industrial boom has injected significant economic growth into the region. Consequently, the factories have already created jobs for more than 5,000 workers. Additionally, manufacturing positions within the zone offer competitive monthly wages of at least $350.
Future Outlook and Labor Demand
As investment continues to pour into the Koh Kong Zhejiang SEZ, the demand for labor is expected to scale quickly. Therefore, the zone currently requires an additional 3,000 employees. These new hires will sustain the ongoing manufacturing and construction expansion. Ultimately, this growth will continue to accelerate Cambodia’s long-term economic goals.
