BEIJING — Cambodia and China have officially agreed to align the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) with Cambodia’s Pentagonal Strategy (PS). Consequently, this strategic move aims to unlock fresh opportunities across several vital sectors. These target areas include physical infrastructure, industrial expansion, agriculture, digital technology, and human resource development. Both nations intend for this framework synergy to strengthen their long-standing comprehensive strategic partnership.
The agreement took shape during a high-level meeting in Beijing. Prak Sokhonn, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, led the talks alongside Sun Chanthol, First Vice Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC). They met with Wang Yi, China’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. Notably, Chanthol and Wang also serve together as co-chairs of the Cambodia-China Inter-Governmental Coordination Committee.
Driving Inclusive and Long-Term Economic Growth
During the discussions, both sides heavily emphasized political trust. They also reaffirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral economic cooperation. According to Sun Chanthol, the alignment of the Belt and Road Initiative with the Pentagonal Strategy is essential. This is because the dual framework will promote long-term, sustainable, and inclusive economic growth in Cambodia.
Furthermore, both parties expressed great optimism about the policy integration. They believe that closer synergy will generate new, high-potential projects. Additionally, the leaders highlighted the importance of frequent high-level exchanges. These interactions will help maintain strong ties and ensure the effective implementation of their shared development goals.
Expanding Artificial Intelligence and Tech Cooperation
As a result of these talks, Cambodia remains deeply committed to broadening its bilateral ties. Minister Prak Sokhonn specifically commended the resounding success of the first Cambodia-China 2+2 Strategic Dialogue. This initial event took place in Phnom Penh earlier this year.
Meanwhile, Chinese officials warmly reciprocated this sentiment. Gua Jiakun, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that China will always remain Cambodia’s solid strategic anchor. China plans to stand as a reliable partner and an ironclad friend with a shared destiny.
Moreover, Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wenbin shared insights on his official social media platform. He noted that China is willing to deepen cooperation in modern fields. Specifically, these fields include clean energy, the digital economy, and artificial intelligence. Therefore, both nations will continue to build a secure environment to pass this historic friendship down to future generations.
